I was wondering if anyone has used sign language with their child. Is there a good book to get? When do you start teaching your child the signs? Any advice would be helpful... |

Signing is wonderful. There are some great cards you can get at any book store. Six months I would start!!!! |

Hi Elizabeth! There was a free class last week at babies'R'Us at Union Sq and it was really interesting. You can start at 8 months, she said it's the best time. You should start with three easy signs like milk, more and done and repeat them for a month, always with eye contact and in right context. When You notice that baby seems to understand them (not neccessary uses them, sometimes they do sometimes don't) , You can add few more. There is a few good sites she recommended with free presentations and instructions: www.sign2me.com www.lifeprint.com www.aslpro.com and few more. Melissa's contact: 347-256-3306, Mvanwijk1@optonline.net There is also few "schools" in NYc, one at Brooklyn I think which teach sign language through music and play. If You're interested I can forward You ones I found. And there will be probably another presentation at Babies'R'Us, I'll post about it when I see it at the flyer.

I started signing to my daughter as soon as I she could look at me (so within her first few days). If you use signs such as milk, mom, dad, food, drink, etc often... then your baby will eventually understand what you are saying. My little girl appeared to understand me early on, but didn't start using signs on her own until about 11 months. She is 18 months now and she signs all the time. You are on the right track, signing has helped my little girl's vocabulary tremendously. |
