Hi,
I have tendonitis in my left wrist and carpal tunnel in my right. My doctor says he sees this allot with first time Moms (I have a 16 month old). Has anyone else experienced this? If so, how do you manage it? |

Hi Faith,
Yes I had tendonitis and carpal tunnel in my right hand. The tendonitis was from a fall many years ago and well carpal tunnel from typing i guess. BUT anyway yeah my doctor said the same thing yours did. I had to get 2 surgeries in my right hand. The tendonitis surgery was first it was done on my wrist. It was a in and out surgery. They were going to just wrap it up in a soft cast. I told them I wan't a hard cast because well lets just say I'm not very graceful. LOL. So they gave me a hard cast from my hand all the way up to .. almost my elbow. After everything was all done with my hand healed up pretty quick but I needed extra help with my daughter. When I had the surgery done she was only 3 months and my right hand wasn't too user friendly. Then I had my second surgery (same hand) healed good but again needed help with my daughter. Before having the surgery done I did visit a specialist and got advice from him and even were a brace for a long time before both surgeries even slept with one on. But the pain was still there. I even started to go numb in some of my fingertips because of the carpal tunnel - but after the surgery I could feel the finger tips again. My advice see a hand specialist first. It took me 4 months to decide to get surgery. And I am so glad I did. My hand almost feels new again. Good luck. |

well I have arthritis in my neck, shoulders, upper back and wrists and I also have a bad lower back and all of these are due to 2 different car accidents I had before I got pregnant, one in 2000 when I broke my neck and had to have surgery to fuse the bones together and the other one was in 2006 when I got sandwiched between 2 bigger trucks...so other than the pain that I've had for years I haven't noticed anything different since I had my son. But I think the pain from my wrists is starting to go into my hands, its harder to do things when they hurt...its really bad when I am playing with my son(14months) |

I had a similar problem when my son was born. I had a very bad pain in both wrist where it would hurt to pick up my son. I spoke to my doctor about it and he said a woman's ligament become loose when they are pregnant. Therefore, the ligaments in my wrist were loose causing the pain. He did give me some injections(can't remember what it was) that cause slight numbness and discoloration around my wrist but it worked. I haven't had pain since and that was two years ago. |

I think the shot you got was a cortizon shot. It numbs your hand. I've had two of those shots. It numbs it then it's followed by a ton of pain - then your hand either is fixed or it's fixed for like 2 weeks which is what happend to me. I had the shot it hurt then it felt great. Two weeks later it was like nothing ever happened. |

oh yea that is the magic shot, its GREAT! till it wears off, I've had that shot twice for my lower back. But if its just in your wrists and they can do surgery then that should help you alot more...but just remember when you get older you MIGHT get arthritis in the wrists that you have surgery on....thats how I ended up with it in my neck, shoulders and upper back. |

Faith,
Hello, and I feel your pain. I had carpal tunnel during my last pregnancy-it's rough. Try this link-it has a lot of great exercises. Also, watch how you do things. I breastfeed and I noticed how I kept my wrists flexed a lot. I've tried to make a conscious effort to get in a relaxed position and open up my hands. It's the daily activities that if modified can make a real difference. I am an Athletic Trainer and I worked at a physical therapy clinic and the exercises really do make a difference. Keep at it and stay compliant for at least a few weeks / month. It takes time to notice a difference but you will. Good luck.
