nursing while pregnant?
I recently found out I am pregnant again, and I saw my OB/GYN yesterday. He strongly encouraged me to stop nursing immediately. I told him I would like to try to keep nursing my son Luke until he is a year old (he is 8 months now), and my doctor finally agreed. He kept saying "the mother has to come first"... I have read lots of info on nursing during pregnancy and everything I read said that for at least the first twenty weeks there is no reason to stop. Has anyone ever nursed while pregnant or has any experience in this area? I was frankly surprised that my doctor advised me to stop. Thanks guys

I have and actually am currently. I nursed #2 almost all the way through pregnancy #3, only stopping around 30 weeks when I started threatening preterm labor. He was a bit over 2 years old at the time. Right now, I'm 15 weeks along and nursing my 23 month old daughter like crazy! The main things to worry about is making sure you are getting PLENTY of liquids (at least a half gallon of water a day) and enough calories. Keep in mind, between nursing and being pregnant, you need to be getting about 800 (quality...not junk food) calories a day above what you normally would do. As long as you aren't at high risk for miscarriage or preterm labor, don't worry about it.

Doctors are idiots (IMO) and men especially have no business being OB/GYNs (in my STRONG opinion) so listen to your mama instincts before him. :-)

I was wondering the same thing. I am 4 weeks pregnant and my son is 13 months old. I now only nurse in the mornings and evenings but I wanted to make sure it was okay. The research that I looked into said the same it is same as long as not high risk. Glad to see there are others out there.

Sorry to be replying so late (life is crazy now with a newborn!).  I just had  a baby a month ago, and nursed my firstborn throughout the pregnancy.  My OB/GYN never said either way to stop or keep nursing.  I read everything I could  about it, and unless you have some sort of medical condition (history of miscarriage or preterm labor, etc etc) it should be safe.

I thought my daughter would wean while I was pregnant, because the composition & flavor of the milk changes as the pregnancy wears on.  But she nursed the entire time.  And I did not deliver prematurely at all (39.3 weeks is pretty full term).

The hierarchy of how the nutrients are distributed goes: fetus first, milk second, mother last of all.  So be sure you are getting enough calories, or you will be the one to suffer (your babies will get the nutrition first).  I had trouble gaining weight in the first 18 weeks or so but my Dr. was not concerned and my baby was completely healthy & strong at birth.

I didn't set out to be a tandem nursing mom, but having a toddler does help with engorgement especially those first few weeks.  Also, my milk stayed white and plentiful until after delivery (it went back to colostrum for only about 24-48 hrs ) and it seemed to "come in" as mature milk much quicker.  My baby only lost about 3 oz before regaining birthweight and then some.

Bethany, thanks for the great post it is very encorging.

Katie at this time I too am pregant with my second and have been nursing my first. I have to say I thought she would stop but she has it.

I also did a lot of reach and my pregancy is going well. My OB/GYN never said either way in regards to nursing.

She is 21 monthes now and I am 36 weeks pregant. She nurses an aveage of 2 time a day no more the 15 mins.

Good luck. =)
