Sorry to be replying so late (life is crazy now with a newborn!). I just had a baby a month ago, and nursed my firstborn throughout the pregnancy. My OB/GYN never said either way to stop or keep nursing. I read everything I could about it, and unless you have some sort of medical condition (history of miscarriage or preterm labor, etc etc) it should be safe.
I thought my daughter would wean while I was pregnant, because the composition & flavor of the milk changes as the pregnancy wears on. But she nursed the entire time. And I did not deliver prematurely at all (39.3 weeks is pretty full term).
The hierarchy of how the nutrients are distributed goes: fetus first, milk second, mother last of all. So be sure you are getting enough calories, or you will be the one to suffer (your babies will get the nutrition first). I had trouble gaining weight in the first 18 weeks or so but my Dr. was not concerned and my baby was completely healthy & strong at birth.
I didn't set out to be a tandem nursing mom, but having a toddler does help with engorgement especially those first few weeks. Also, my milk stayed white and plentiful until after delivery (it went back to colostrum for only about 24-48 hrs ) and it seemed to "come in" as mature milk much quicker. My baby only lost about 3 oz before regaining birthweight and then some. |
