I want my children to learn how to swim so that they have a better chance surviving something such as a boat that flips over or sinks, etc, especially since we have a wind surfer, sailboat, pontoon boat, speed boat, and my husband has a kayak . I also want them to have fun in the water too since we have water skis, an inner tube, and a knee board.

Thank you for your response to my poll. Naturally most think swimming is what will save them. It is a myth. Getting air is what will save them. If your boat tipped over, where on earth would your 2 year old swim to, or worse would they even be able to swim far enough to safety in the middle of a lake or ocean etc. You really want them to learn to survive. They don't need to be taught how to have fun in any area, that comes naturally. What doesn't come naturally and needs to be taught is going from face down to a face up postion laying on their back breathing comfortably, calmly waiting for help to come. My daughter can do just that thanks to a 42 year old company called "Infant Swimming Resource".

Thank You for that info. We always put our children in life jackets on the boat, we have only used the pontoon boat in the past two or 3 years and either myself or my husbands mother holds her when we are on it, my husband's father always holds our son and our dog just sits on the seat, my daughter hates the life jacket but we wont let her take it off. I figured that they would probaly prefer the speed boat when they get in their teens. I have a fear of water and almost drown in a lake with undercurrents that was the scariest day of my life, I was riding a jet ski it stalled then fliped over I was saved by an elderly couple that had just sold the yaht club that they owned and were taking a last ride around the lake before they moved to Florida. I was so lucky and so thankful to that couple. We don't have any jet ski's and I never road one again. I am very concerned about my childrens safety in and around water. Also my grandma always told me that not panicking will help you, but that didn't help me any I have always had a fear of water (of course I was trying to impress a boy). I don't know what I was thinking but I didn't think that jet ski's could flip over. Boy was I wrong. I belive that when they get oldenough to use the things that get pulled by the boat it is important that they learn how to do it safely. My husband is the only one in the family besides his cousin and friend that use the water toys as my mother inlaw also has a fear of water and my father in law is always telling us he isn't a spring chicken anymore.

No need to apologize I enjoyed reading it. I'm glad to know you survived that near drowning experience. So you can relate and know the real importance of keeping your children safe in the water. You should really think of getting them into the Infant Swimming Resource Drowning Prevention program. You will love it and will be amazed at how they perform the survival skills. It gives you some peace of mind. Please check it out. www.infantswim.com. You won't be dissappointed. If you are in the Manhattan area I know there is a session beginning next week and goes until April.

Unfortunitely I live in Michigan, My husband's friend maybe getting married in Niagra Falls this summer but he is not sure yet, I thought a wedding there would have to be scheduled a long time in advance, but anyway. It will just be him and I. Do you know if they have any classes here in Michigan? My daughter loves the water but my son is very scared of the water he is 10 mo's old and by that age my daughter loved it. I hope that he comes to like it and classes might just be the thing to help him overcome it. And it certainly wouldn't hurt my daughter any. Thank you, Heather

P.S. My husband's family's cottage that we take our boats on backs up to the lake and they said that there is no way to put up a fence which scares the heck out of me my daughter is only two and I am afraid of her getting away from us and going down there though we try so hard to keep an eye on her at all times and by this summer my son should be walking. We go up there almost every weekend. As a side note we have a miniture grey hound we got as a puppy in Dec 07, we took him there last spring and let him out, my huband only took his eyes off of him for a second and he was gone. We searched the neighborhood and my husband found him sopping wet and very scared about 10 cottages down and also bleeding. There is a retaining wall about 3 ft high so we figured that he must have gotten stuck in the water and had to swim to someone elses house's back yard that doesn't have as high of a retaining wall.
