I learned at a young age, and I think its important to learn young. You never know when something will happen(and yes ladies SHIT happens) and they will need it to survive.

My daughter is 10 months old and we recently started swim lessons. I think the earlier the better because it gets them use to the water and what it's like to splash. It's also a good bonding activity. Also it will help teach them about staying active.

I learned to swim when I was about 9 or 10 but I assume that my daughter will learn around 3 or 4. My son on the other hand screams loudly at every bath and the whole bath through if he hates water that much it is doubtfull he will even get close enough to a pool to learn.

First everyone is born knowing how to swim... I mean you did spend about nine months in nothing but water. I think as soon as a parent and dr say that its alright for a child to get into a pool they should. I know if my son was born in the summer we would be out in one of those little pools as soon as his bellybutton was healed. But Im already working with him on floating in the tub and he 4weeks. I went to the Y where my aunt and her friend were liffeguards when I was 6months thats the earlest you can find anywhere for classes. Which I think is crap. As soon as my son's dr says he can get into a pool he's coming with me to our gym. I use to be a life guard and tought swim lessons and mommy and me classes. I know things happen first hand... we lost my baby cousin she was one when my uncle found her face down in the pool. To those that have kids that are scared of the water... it doesn't mean that they can't drowned in a pool or any other body of water... you should still take them and get lessons. I've always had a number of children that were scared of the water in my classes, and by the end of the classes they couldn't wait to get into the pool and they were swimming by themselves. Please teach your children to swim ASAP trust me I hate to see people go through what my Uncle had to... PLEASE it could save your Child's Life.
