we just had a "casual" bbq for my little guy's 2nd b-day...nothing crazy, a Barney theme, 20 plus guests...I think the whole thing probably cost around $300. |

I guess I'm use to doing it all myself....$300 is WAY too much money...Ok I haven't had my son a bday party yet...Dec is coming soon. But I already know that if he's gonna get any presents the party will have to be downsized...If I work with a budget of $300 TOTAL, presents and all then that would be ok...You don't need a lot of decorations, or doodads....simple is the key. |

It's not hard to do, especially for their first birthday. They will only get to see the pics of it when they are older. They will not remember it, nor can they usually participate in the activities available. I say do what you feel and makes you satisified. I spent too much, but it was in our home with all friends and family. It was a lot of work and stress but totally worth it. Besides they only turn 1 once. Only do it for the milestones, not every year. |

My son's three years old and isn't in daycare, a playgroup, or playschool so he hasn't made any real friends yet. For his birthday since we don't have any family living close, we''ve just made his birthday party's me, my husband, and him. I almost fell over when I seen what some of you spent. I guess I know what I'm in for when he makes friends. |

I would never spend that much even on myself let alone my kids. You can get a lot of party stuff at the dollar store or even walmart and still not even spend $50. We have a rule in our family that we let everyone else buy the big stuff and we wait until after the birthday or holiday to buy our gifts so that we don't spend a lot. |

I believe that it depends on the age of the kid and how many people you are going to invite. My daughters first birthday last year didn't cost that much but I am sure that we will have expensive birthday parties, Im sure that her 16th will be welll over $300.00. |

For my daughters 1st birthday, for decorations, party favors, plates and such, drinks and cake plus the 2 presents she got from us i spent about $300. i dont think that it was too much, only because it was the whole shabang, not just a few things. |

I am too frugal for that much. I did no decorations and baked my own cupcakes. I had moderately priced party favors. |

Well i think it depends on where u live and where u have it Im in NYC and 350 is the going rate to have it in a kiddie place with a theme and 10 kids and each additional kid is 15 and everything else is additional food for adults, party favors, balloons etc. so here 300 can only work if u have it at home |

We just had a potluck bday party for my son. We provided the meat and everyone else brought sides. I splurged on some water balloons and water guns, but the biggest toy was my hubby who kept the kids entertained with dodge ball pretty much the whole afternoon. I doubt we spent more than $75 total |

My daughter's first birthday cost us about $500, and her second birthday was around $300. We moved before her third birthday and didn't really know anyone, so we took her to Chuck E Cheese for a few hours, and I made her a madagascar cake at home that looked great, and she loved it. Probably spent about $50-60 total. I did feel like she was sort of being jipped since the other two parties were so much more, but she really enjoyed her day, and in the end that is what really matters. |

I am making most of the party favors and the Monster Truck Sign that will be out in front of the house will be cut out of cardboard and painted. We are lucky to have a huge yard and a pool for the kids to play in. Also I decided to do Airbrush tattoo's myself. So I am saving a TON of money. |

Maybe when your child is older, but a 1 year old will not remember his birthday! |

For a 1 yr old that is silly. You are doing it for yourself, so evaluate your priorities. I have spent at least $300 on a 16 yr old party and a 21 yr old party. Last year we had a party of 30 adult friends with a luau theme, food and drinks for under $400. |

For my sons 1st birthday, my fiancee and I spent atleast $400. We also have 3 sets of families so there were 75 people there. We did everything ourselves. I think I just wanted to impress everyone and have everything go great. It all added up!! I dont reget spending that amount but I know his 2nd Birthday is not going to be near that amount and its going to be just fun and family togetherness. His second b-day will be very less stressful. |

when doing a first bday you want to buy ALL the 1st bday gear...hats...balloons...napkins...plates...AND for girls The PRINCESS CHAIR...tutu...crown and wand...ect..$300 is not enough. HOWEVER SIMPLE IS BETTER and no matter the budget..if you shop around, use EBAY, AMAZON, CRAIGSLIST ect. YOU CAN MAKE ANYTHING GREAT AND CHEAP!!!! |

I definitely think that $300 is a little pricey for a birthday party especially if it is for a little kid (under the age of 16). If the child is less than 6 years old, he or she will most likely not remember the day. Why spend a lot of money on something that he or she will not remember? I can see a birthday end up costing a lot of money if there are a lot of guests, food, or location (just to name a few) at the party, but other than that, I would not spend a lot of money on a party if the child is less than 16 years old. Just as some other moms commented, if you do your research, you can definitely find better deals elsewhere. I guess the bottom line is, it is what your family decides, each one is different from the other. If you want to spend that amount of money on a birthday (and have that amount willing to spare), so be it. If not, there are alternative choices you can make. |

We spent a little under $200 this past year. Took her to a water resort and spent the night and a whole day there. She loved it even though it was just us three. It was nice because all the attention was focused on her, no worries about other kids. When we were there she just played with the other kids there, so she had fun. |
