You'll be be amazed by the many ways your child will benefit far beyond speaking the new language. Experts have proven that EARLY exposure to a foreign language has been scientifically linked to higher IQ scores, improved English and math scores, a richer vocabulary and even a boost in SAT scores. Research proves that the acquisiton of a second language enriches a child's mental development. It also instills in your child a sense of global community, as well as appreciation and tolerance for other people and their culture.

Although I answered "no", allow me to explain. I think that the answer to the question "is it beneficial for a child to learn a second language?" would obviously be "yes", however I don't think it's the word "important" should be used...makes it seem necessary, if not detrimental if not learned.

I think now that the US is getting more people that speak a diverse language, it probably wouldn't hurt for any child to learn just basic words and then as they get older, let them choose on if they want to learn more of that language.

I believe it to be important, by the time my baby grows up almost all industries deal with foreign entities. I am bilingual and it is helpful with work.
My hubby wants her to learn my language but also a 3rd. a form of Chinese most likely. My Grandfather knew 5 languages and he benefit a lot he was a Metallurgist so it was good to know.

I agree with the others when they say it is "beneficial" but not "important." It is a plus to know 2 or more languages these days and I agree with Maribel's post, but it is "important". So, that is why most people are going to vote "no".

My son picks up Spanish just from watching Dora and Diego. He is 4 and has to tell me what the spanish word means and I took spanish in high school.

I voted unsure. As a working mother of four children, I don't believe that it is always feasible unless it is something that the school systems provide. So while it is a "nice to have" I don't believe it is a "must have."

Our children are almost destined to learn a 2nd even a third language. My husband speaks 7 languages and I speak 3. I think they will be more adaptable that way and can adjust to any culture.

It is beneficial, as many of the commentors related, but it is also important as well. This is a global economy, now, in 2009. Just think about when our little ones become the adults, in the job market. The more they learn now, the more opportunities for them later.

I was born and raised in California by Portuguese parents. I speak Portuguese and Spanish fluently and I also speak French and Italian not so fluently. I think knowing multiple languages is important for a child because it opens up so many doors to their future. The more languages you know, the more people you can help.
