The ONLY reason I would consider homeschooling my child is if he/she had VERY special needs and I didn't feel they were being met in a public OR private/specialized school. I would try those avenues first and if I felt I could provide a better service (I have a background in special ed), then I would homeschool. I don't believe in homeschooling...most of the above reasons can and should be overcome by simply learning life skills....learn that there are other people in the world other than you, ignore the bad influences, stick to your guns, embrace other religions, etc. Schools provide social opportunites that homeschooling doesn't. Last time I checked, the "real world" doesn't occur only in home... |

How are private schools safer than public schools? Is it because they do screening before admitting the students? |

i agree all the above. even though my child does attend a public school. i have high anxiety and worry bout him constantly (he is only 5) i do like that he does get to interact in the "real" world. i have been a student of public and christian schools. i do love the fact that the christian school offers to teach what i feel that i believe and that he might not be laughed at if he wanted to pray. but the truth is school is school no matter what. kids will be kids any where. |

I homeschool my 3 children & we are able to move at their pace. I will try to continue to homeschool until middle school. I taught in the public schools for 10 years and it has gotten worse each year. I can't focus on how other parents are/aren't raising their children, but I can give mine a strong foundation to be able to handle the pressures & pleasures of traditional schooling. As far a socialization, most homeschooled children socialize more than children in traditional school. There are plenty of activities for children to interact with their peers other than school. By the way, as an educator, that is part of the problem with schools today. TOO much socialization & not enough education. :) |

I agree with all of those answers, in addition to the fact that I have a degree in elementary and early childhood education... it's what I love to do, with the children I love most! |

Is there an all of the above option? I was homeschooled for 2 years in high school and loved it. It was a great way for me to learn at my own pace and not have as much bad influence starting high school. My only issue was that I had no friends and all the other homeschool kids were younger than I was. I thought it would be great for my kids, but being that my daughter has a slight learning delay that only other children could help her with, it was better for her to go to school. |

After having attended a public school that was supposedly a Blue Ribbon school I would definatly home school or send my child to private school. there are very few things that I learned in school that i use to this day. My life skills class was amazing as was the childhood development class I took. I never use algebra or geometry rarely do I use the spanish I learned. I think things need to be re done in our schools. Over crowding and bad teachers. I also don't believe in the hours on end of homework kids are sent home with. I had 6 50 minute classes a day and most of the time I needed more to fully understand the concepts. |

My family disagrees with my wanting to home school but when I was in school I had been sick for most of my early years so my mom was given the circulum to help me not fall behind and by the time I was back to school I was so far ahead of my classmates that the teachers sent me home because I was onto the next school year's lessons!!
Then when I was in high school I had learning disabilities that I had to go to the resource teacher 3 times a week and what I learned with him was not approved by the regular teachers so there was a constant friction.
Many people have their own reasons for wanting to home school and these are just a few of my own!! However to each his own and good luck to everyone however you choose to have your children educated!! |

I think that home schooling is a great way for you children to learn everything without pressure. I really think that public schools have lost a lot of the reason why children are there. they are there for an education not daycare. Publics schools don't teach your children how to read in the proper way which should be through phonics, and they also only work as fast as the slowest students and there is now place for advancement. |

I'm sure there are many positives to home schooling but I don't think my child would benefit from my teaching abilities. Plus my mom is a reading teacher at the school I went to and I loved it. |
