I always put my daughter in the middle when she was rear facing. Her older bro and sis (my step kids) would sit on either side. This would keep the older kids from fighting and they would help keep the sun out of the babies eyes and give the binky back if needed. They are all about 8 years apart so the eye poking was not an issue. I now have a larger vehicle with a third row seat so one of the older kids will sit in the back and I moved the car seat into the center now so that they can get to the third row.

Hopefully the older kids would know better about bothering the baby. But if not I don't know. Right now it's not a problem for me because I only have the one.

Our solution was to buy a van. I though bench seat would give them more room, but have found out rear captains chairs kepts the children apart for long ride. Ahhh the peace!!!

It's nice having the newborn in the center, better getting to them when needed. Hopefully the other children don't poke at them, but they can easily do it anywhere else as well. It's all about what works best, I guess. A mini van works best with more children. Thankfully I only have two children, so don't have to really deal with it.

I was a nanny for two boys, ages 4 & 6, when my daughter was born. I put my daughter between them. This way they didn't fight over who got to sit next to her. When I got my minivan, I put my daughter in the second row (it is bench seat) and put one car seat next to her. I put the other seat in the back. The boys would take turns sitting next to her. If they were acting up, I would put them both in the back.

Never really considered it, but I opt for the baby in the middle. As Roxy mentioned easier to get to, and the older kids are more likely to want to look out the windows.

I recently attending a carseat safety class at the local police dept. The safest spot is in the middle therefore the smallest/youngest should be in middle.

That is a tough question especialy if they are all under about 4. I have wondered what we would do about that if we had another baby. We have a 1 and 2 yr old so I would be having the same concerns since neither of my children would know to not hurt the baby and I would want the baby to be in the safest place.

I put the baby (9months) behind the drivers seat, middle child (2 yrs) in the middle, and oldest (8 yrs) behind the passenger seat. That way, while i am buckling the baby, the oldest can open the door and put her sister in the middle and buckle her up. It also gives the oldest easy access to the door so she can get in and out as needed without having to climb over tiny legs hanging off giant carseats.

Statistically the middle is the safest spot for the youngest, esp for rear facing babies. As it is I have baby number 4 coming and a dodge caravan so my newborn will be in the first row closer to me an away from the older ones in the back. Plus the socond row is of course a bench an not captians seats so the baby can still be in the middle.

I'll have my third (in three years) arrive this February. We bought a larger car with a 3rd row but my soon-to-be 3 year old won't be back there for a little bit longer. Until then the newborn goes on the passenger side with my middle child in the middle. Since my middle one will still need help with things and my older can take care of herself and I can reach the rear passenger seat to take care fo the baby. This might change though when I see how it works out in reality.

I have three children and sometimes I believe it depends on the children themselves. I cannot put my 4 yr old next to the 5mo. old because she is jealous and will definitely do the
"eye poking thing" so I have to put my 3yr old in the middle to seperate the 4yr. old from the baby. My 3yr old is very mild mannered and is a big help w/the BINKY!! |
