As a first time mom of a 20 month old son I just do not know what to da. I have heard reports that "we Americans" are blowing this out of proportion and that no deaths have occured but that is not a risk I really want to take...

It also depends on the child's age. My kids are 6 so they don't put their toys in their mouth, but if I had infants, I would be freaked out :-)

My son is nearly 20 months old and he still puts everything (including his fingers) in his mouth so I am not sure what to do about toys for Christmas. We have even started monitoring the toys that he gets in kids meals and if they were made in China then they are thrown out. the really surprising thing was when they started re-calling certain bibs I mean come on what is going on.

My kids are 4 and 6 but my daughter has had pollypockets for about 3 years!! This would have made my son 1 when we got them. They get led tests every year but who knows how much exposure the've had. Also, those toys had a lot of small peices and after all those years, I hope I got them all. This was a little tramatic for my daughter to throw away her toys that she has played with most her life.

I try to avoid the mainstream cheap, plastic throw-away toys anyway and stick to higher quality (usually domestic or even handmade) toys, so we haven't really been impacted by the recalls. I still moniter them though and make sure we don't have anything that might have gotten picked up at a yard sale or anything that would be recalled.

to be honest I am beginning to feel like China has figured out a new threat for Americans...it seems like hey have laid off the nuclear scare and worked their ways into our homes by affecting our kids and pets.

Ditto to what Nicole said!!!

I went home and found that all but 2 toys were made in China- these are all good toys and I could not throw all of them away. I have my son tested for led anyways and he is always ok. Also he doesn't really put things in his mouth. I am at a loss for what to do. This whole led in toys is A LOT bigger than what it is, with all the child labor laws being broken and how the toys are made I really trust no one.

Seems to me, without getting too political, that we (American's) are putting our children at risk with everything we import from China. Our government is borrowing money hand over fist from them so we'll be indebted. With all the lead issues coming up with the toys, it seems that the Chinese are thinking well ahead into our childrens future making it difficult for them to dig out of the economic mess we are making for them. Not too long ago there was an outcry as China pulled head in the race to excell in math and engineering. Well, hard to teach math, english, engineering, whatever to a child with developmental delays. Hmmm, interesting that lead causes many forms of developmental delays and learning disablities. I believe we have under estimated other countries desire to "rule the world" and certainly their distain for all things American. The only time this eutopia of a global market that the politicians are shoving down our throats will ever work is if all nations are working towards the same goals. Let's not be naive enought to think that is the case. I sound hard, maybe, but I am married to a naturalized citizen and have traveled extensively. There are many, many countries (some not as far away as you might think) where Americans are not greeted with open arms. Maybe we should be a bit more protective our children and our future. Did I start with the line that I wasn't going to get political? Sorry about that.

Nice rant Michelle! Yes, I do worry, all products intended for children should be thoroughly tested and proven safe BEFORE they reach shelves in ANY country. and not recalled in mass flurry and panic after some poor kid spends the night in the ER or worse! I am happy for China and the industrial growth they are experiencing, but the safety and welfare of children should always come first. What truly has me in a panic is the fact that I have a 3-year-old with HUNDREDS of littlest Pet shop toys that come with Thousands of tinny tiny parts and a new baby on the way! I can't walk through a single room in my home without stepping on at least a few of these tiny plastic animals and I have no idea how I'm going to keep them out of a babies mouth!

I absolutely agree with Jamie and Michelle. It disheartened me to hear that Mattel sent an executive over to China to apologize to THEM for the lead THEY are putting in the toys they are making and importing into this country. WHERE is the OUTRAGE as Americans that we allow this??? And WHY are we apologizing to them for poisoning our children?? It is a sad state of affairs when we put business over the health and well-being of our children all for the all-mighty dollar.
I, for one, won't be buying anything from Mattel or Fisher Price for the holidays for my kids. And, if that means that they have to resort to playing with old blocks of wood that were my husband's when he was a child or pots and pans under my sink, I'm sure that they will be just as happy to do that as to have some Lead-ladened toy that will just end up in next year's garage sale!

Not really, look at all the food recalls!

I have a feeling that the sudden increase in recalls has more to do with our government trying to find some way to have influence over China. China will soon be the next global super-power and our government needs to have some way to show the Chinese that we can have a negative influence on them if they don't "play nice."

My daughter is just getting to that stage of playing with toys so im not that worried.

I had lead poisoning during my pregnancy (I think I got it from breathing in chemicals while working - I conduct insurance inspections and I visit many manufacturing and industrial facilities). I was soooo scared that something may have happened to my son! I was very lucky that he was born healthy and the thought I having to worry about his toys sickens me...

it is big concern. We don't know until they said they are recalled unti that the kids can play and get harm.

I check out the toy myself...mommy inspection...and decide if its safe before I buy. If a toy is package I be sure to keep the receipt and return it if it isn't satisfactory... Trust NO ONE.

Some of the recalls are just common sense. toys tend to break after a while. It's up to the parents to check the toys to make sure they remain in good condition. the ones that are recalled due to lead in the paint should be blamed on the companies for importing everything from China. Bring the work back to the states where we can better regulate them. Greedy companies are the main problem.

I am dealing with my second Crib recall in the past year. The companies don't care abou thow it affects the families at all.

I mean, really! I know I am a young (27) father here, but give me a break. I understand alot of parents are concerned, but how many of us played with toys when we were kids that were MADE of lead? And look how cool we are now!! I think this whole recall thing on all the lead is just a hoax to make the American people worry, like we don't have enough to worry about anyway.

Nothing in the world can be proven 100% safe as a parent it is my responsibility to monitor what my child plays with and when. I do feel companies hold the responisibility to make a toy as safe as they can but once I have paid for the toy responsibility passed from them to me. This will seem harsh but if you are unwilling to monitor your own child perhaps adoption would have been a better option.
