My oldest daughter was nipple confused for the first 2 weeks of her life, she couldn't/ wouldn't latch on to me to nurse. The Dr.s just kept telling me to be patient, she would figure it out.
Finally, I had had it. I couldn't make her starve anymore!
So, I turned to formula. First I tried Carnation Good Start, but she ended up projectile vomiting it all up. Obviously, that wasn't gonna work, so I switched over to Enfamil. Never had a problem with it.
So, when her sister's were born, I just stuck with what worked. |

We have to use Lactofree formula because our son is lactose intollerant. He was since day 1 and kept vomitting breastmilk and every other type we tried. Sometimes formula is a parent's only choice. Other wise our son is completely healthy and has not ever been sick. |

I tried to breastfeed when she was first born but after 2 weeks and no weight gain at all i decided to switch to formula. at first we used Enfimil only she was allergic to practically everything. We then tried a lactose free formula and that still didnt help. With me being Lactose intolerant I knew that she was as well and took her to the doctor and he had us try a hypoallergenic formula that is lactose free and portien free which helped dramatically. She gained the weight finally and was able to start whole milk at age one and has had no problems since.

I breastfed until Donovan weaned himself at 10 months old then I put him on similac ready made. It was the closest thing that looked and tasted like my breast milk. I was pretty happy with it. |

You know I have to say- any please understand I am not a mean person- but this is a ?? about what formula people used- not what is so horrible and what is not horrible for kids. I think as adults we should all respect eachothers opions but to say what one parent does is right or wrong goes against what a "parenting" website is all about. As long as our kids are healthy, happy and beautiful we are ALL right and NOTHING is horrible. |

I breastfed my son and still do. He has started on solids, but nurses before he eats the actual food. If he nurses til he's a year, thats fine with me. I did give him a formula bottle before bed last night to get him to sleep through the night and it seemed to work. I used the Enfamil Lipil with iron. |

I tried breastfeeding but in the beginning he had to take formula because of low blood sugar...so for three months I did both...started of with enfamil lipil with iron...expensive so we tried kirkland and our son took to it...i would like to comment on the mother who said it was horrible to feed our babies formule...we have a right to choose and it is not horrible because aslong as they are healthy, WE ARE GREAT MOMS |

I breastfed both of mine until they were 18 months...and I wouldn't have had it any other way. I think formula is much more risky to a baby's health than is generally accepted...and I believe pediatricians and other health care providers take a much too casual attitude towards formula. Formula should be an absolute last resort, IMO, and should be available only through prescription. If you think that sounds crazy, google "infant formula dangers" and read for a little while. Babies die at MUCH higher rates when on formula as compared to breastmilk. I'm not trying to offend anyone, I'm really not. But I consider it a safety issue like buckling your child's car seat. |

I breastfed for the first 3 or 4 weeks, then we switched to formula. We started out with Similac, but the Enfamil was a bit less expensive so we tried that. My daughter did just fine with that. I tried the Carnation brand, but she didn't really care for it. |

I agree with you, Renata. Not everybody is able to breastfeed for various reasons. I am glad that my little one was able to get some breastmilk, but she did fine with the formula also. She actually gained weight faster than a lot of little ones her age, according to our pediatrician, and she is very happy and healthy. :-) |

With my first son, we used Enfamil faithfully. But with the second, you learn they are all the same and have the same needs, so you go with the cheaper one, unless they have special needs, like Colic, or lactose, with my children did. |

With my second baby, I pumped for 3 months. He was never able to latch on because he was in the peds. card. NICU for the first month of his life. All along I had to suppliment my breast milk with pregestimil (a VERY expensive formula- $32 for a 1 lb. can) I had to use formula so my baby was getting 24 calorie milk. Regular formula and breast milk has only 20 calories. My son needed the extra calories in order to gain weight and heal. He is currently on Enfamil, and I still need to mix it in a way that makes it 24 calories. While I agree that "breast milk is best", some mothers need to choose other options for whatever reason. We need to be sensitive to this and understand that we are all trying to do our best. |

First off THANK YOU to Renata and Lisa for being understanding. I was die hard going to breast feed my baby so much that I didn't have a can of formula in my house! When she was born and I was trying to breast feed, my nipples stayed flat. I was able to get a little breast milk to her through a nipple shield or pumping, but I still had to supplement. I finally dried up after 3 weeks. It was not my choice as is for a lot of other mothers. Currently I use Enfamil Lipil for her and she is happy and healthy. Please keep in mind that this was just a question about what formula we use, not our opinion of it. |

My daughter started out nursing until she didnt want tom which was about a week. This being my first daughter i didnt know i could try longer than that, anyway we started her off in similac, and i got a coupon in the mail for enfamil, and she stood on that until she was off the formula. I like enfamil better because they also made travel packets which made it so much easier when going out places and similac and carnation didnt have that luxury. |

My daugther is a premiee, so for 12 weeks I was able to pump breastmilk ( she had a feeding tube through her nose). But, I was unable to keep up with her demand, we tried the over counter herbs and Dr. RX but it was not enough, so we started on Neosure by Similac. After 5 months, we switched per Dr. to Advance by Similac. We are still using the Advance and soild food. |

I must agree breastfeeding is not for everyone, but yes it is the best. My son was only breastfed for 2 months. I was told to stop or my doctor was going to hospitalize me away from my child. I had severe mastitis and a massive infection. My daughter I made it 6 months of strickly pumping because my nipples were damaged with my son. So I commend those that can do it, but I don't condem those that can't. With both children we went to enfamil. |

I started out breastfeeding, but my daughter had trouble latching on. I spoke with lactation consultants almost everyday for about three weeks. We tried varying positions, nipple shields, supplemental feeding systems, herbs, RX, and nothing seemed to help. Her pediatrition had us supplement because she was losing weight (almost a pound and a half in 12 days). I breastfed, supplemented with formula, and pumped for about 10 weeks. My daghter gave up on breastfeeding and I just couldn't pump enough milk for her. We use enfamil now and she is doing great! Every once in awhile when she is fussy or upset I will let her suckle at my breast. I don't think she is getting milk any longer, but it comforts her and allows us to have time close together. |

I have Fibromyalgia and was simply not able to breastfeed our daughter. I beat myself up for weeks that I was not able to "feed" our little one. Why do some moms insist on putting even more pressure on new moms that needed. Every family has something that works for them... |

I really wanted to breastfeed my son all the way, but because he eats so much I can't keep up with him so now he is on infamil. I still breastfeed him in the morning and before bed. To give you an example of how much he eats, we had to start him on cereal at two and a half months because the breast milk and formula were not satisfying his hunger. Even when we feed him cereal he gets hungry again after a few hours and he is now only three months old in a six month olds body. |

breast feeding can be difficult....i would suggest nipple-covers, I think that Advent may make them, but they sell them at babies r us. They are meant to be used to protect your sore nipples, but they are a latex cover that covers the nipple. They are a great shape, and helped my daughter latch, and stay latched throughout her entire feeding. I weaned her off of them pretty quickly, but they certainly helped in the begining. |

I didn't use fomula with my daughter and I don't plan to use it with this baby either.
I know that nipple-covers can help but I would STRONGLY advise against useing them, I had the hardest time getting her off of it and it was like starting over with breastfeeding. |

O.K. first off I am a mother of 5 so have a little experience on the issues of kids. I breastfed and formula fed my children and let me tell you there was NO DIFFERENCE between the one's who did and did not. I am a strong supporter of breastfeeding but find it ridiculous that people would insult others who don't do it (especially since most try) or can't. What right does anyone have to pass judgement on another's life? I commend any woman who trys to breastfeed whether they do it for hours, days, months or years. We are all mothers and want what's best for our children and until you can live in each persons shoes keep your criticism where it belong....to yourself. |

My first son was breastfed up until 17 months. With my second son, we breastfed and supplemented with Parent's Choice. At four months, I stopped breastfeeding. At eight months, we changed to enfamil gentlease due to diet issues. He did have issues with gaining weight due to a medical condition and I feel that the formula benefited his weight gain and overall health more than my breast milk did. Both my boys are very healthy and I'm proud of that. |

I breastfed both of my girls but my firstborn was at a point where she was 'failing to thrive'. Although she was gaining height she wasn't gaining weight so the doctor has us give her 2- 4oz bottles of formula a day (one during the day, one before she went to bed). When we started doing that, she started sleeping through the night. My second didn't want anything to do with a bottle, breastmilk or formula- didn't matter |

Unfortunately, I had a horrible experience breast feeding my kids when they were born, so we used Enfamil with no problems. I did make attempts with both kids to breastfeed, but I lasted about 2 weeks with my son and about a month with my daughter. Even with help from a la leche league nurse, I had severe problems with proper latch on, chapped/bleeding nipples (sorry.. TMI) and after the extreme pain, I just couldn't take it anymore and I stopped and allowed my body to heal. My kids are school aged now, at a healthy weight, and are beautiful intelligent children. This battle over breast vs. formula is ridiculous. You do the best thing that works for your FAMILY, and forget about what everyone else says, as they have no business prying into your life when they haven't got a clue about it. |
