Reading Readiness For Kids and Parents at
Silver City Volunteer Library Friday June 12 and 19
Parents and children 3-6 are invited to a morning of story time, movement and sign language and ideas about increasing reading readiness in preschoolers and kindergarteners on Friday, June 12 and Friday, June 19. Guest teacher Misty VanHavel has used the Dolch sight word list as one tool in teaching her preschooler to read.
The Dolch List, published in 1948 by Edward Dolch, Ph.D, has held up over time as a reliable high frequency word list still used in beginning reading programs. The list includes the 220 words, excluding nouns, that were common to the word lists used in beginning reading programs in the 1940’s - the International Kindergarten Union, The Gates List and the Wheeler-Howl List.
VanHavel’s workshop will be followed with a light snack and an invitation to borrow books from the Silver City Volunteer Library. This workshop is completely free and funded, in part, by the Silver City Task Force and Healthy Communities Coalition with volunteer teaching by Misty VanHavel. It is one in a series of free children’s events that will be hosted by the Silver City Volunteer Library on Friday mornings during the summer.
