Intertek is a leading provider of quality and safety solutions for many of the world’s leading brands and companies. Intertek provides consultation services to companies that manufacture toys and products intended to be used by or for children. Intertek works closely with children and parents to observe and collect data regarding how consumers will potentially use various products, in order to help make these products as safe as possible.
Intertek will be hosting a special mixed age (infant, toddler, preschool, school age) playgroup for children to come in and play, explore, and have fun in our child observation lab. The purpose of this special playgroup is for Intertek’s research scientists to collect video data on children’s exploration strategies and behaviors as they interact with toys. By participating in the playgroup, children are able to work on developing their social-emotional skills, as well as other domains of development such as: cognitive, fine motor, and gross motor skills. We have numerous toys in our playroom that encourage the children to practice these skills and further develop their abilities. It also gives parents a chance to talk to one another, as well as provides the research scientists with valuable data that allows us to consult with companies in order to make children’s toys and products as safe as possible.
Parents are invited to watch their child from the closed circuit television in the lounge area located across from the child observation lab. We are looking to recruit children who would be comfortable being in the child observation lab without their parent or caregiver. As a result, playgroup numbers will be kept small. We are hoping to recruit parents and families that would enjoy helping make consumer products safer by continuing to participate in our groups as often as they could.
The playgroups will be facilitated by one of the research scientists who has a master’s degree in child development from The Erikson Institute. She has six years experience working in family childcare, as well as experience as a child development specialist in a pediatric clinic.

Wednesday, June 1st, 2011 at 10:00am (playgroup will last approximately 45 minutes +snack time).
