toddler hitting

I have a 20mo old son who has a terrible habbit of hitting when he's upset or frustrated.  I do not hit in my home (minus the rare occasion when he gets a hand smack for pulling/chewing on wires) He is in daycare fulltime and from what the daycare provider tells me he does not have this issue there.  I've tried several different things to correct this and nothing has worked. I've tried holding his had and looking him in the eye saying "we don't hit we do nice" and then take his hand and "pet" who/what he just hit.  I've also tried to distract him with something (food/toy) to get his attention elsewhere.  I'm at a loss and the hitting is emotionaly draining on me. I understand it's a way to express himself since he can't communicate very well with words, but being hit in the face if getting old real quick.  PLEASE HELP!!!

Hi Jenn.....My son Garrett is 26 mnths and he hits us, objects and himself from time to time. I do what you said, say No, do Nice, don't hit!" He doesn't go to Daycare and we dont have any other children and we don't hit anything...I was told by his Physical Therapist it's his age....so I don't overreact with my emotions Although getting smacked in the face is Emabarrassing and sometimes Upsetting, I don't let him see that...hoping it's gotten better by now :-) Oh, my husband is gone all week and seems when he's here it happens More b/c he makes a big deal about it....Have to teach the adult in this house not the child!!! hahahaaha Take Care...Amanda
