Many Americans have been affected by summer cold or hay fever. Early descriptions of sneezing, nasal congestion, and eye irritation while harvesting field hay promoted the popular term “hay fever” for summer cold. Even though childhood hay fever is more typical; this condition shows at any age prevalent after years of repeated inhalation of allergic substances. Allergy-producing substances are called "allergens." Some airborne allergens include mold, spores, dust, and animal dander. 50 million North Americans are affected by allergic conditions.
The main symptoms of hay fever are repeated sneezing attacks, runny or itchy nose, itchy or watery eyes, itchy throat, palate and ears, loss of concentration and fever. My family uses a non-contact thermometer. Stress increases hay fever symptoms as the more stressed the person feels; the more likely they are to say they have severe symptoms. Women’s symptoms start earlier in the season and last longer but men’s symptoms are severe yet don’t last that long. People in urban areas are more likely to catch a cold than people in the countryside.
Some people use air filtration devices to filter out pollen in their homes. There are also herbal medicines to treat hay fever. Some foods you eat may worsen the symptoms so try eliminating them. Avoid pollen especially in the morning and you’ll feel the difference. Wish you well.
