potty training - View Question

potty training

ok, i am a mom to one son, soon to be three. i think he might be ready to be potty trained. he can be very stubborn, doesnt like to follow directions+ not much of a great attention span. how can i get him used to the potty? should i first just get him to sit on it a few times a day, with a diaper on? how do you moms handle the "highgien issue" especially if your out somewhere? what would be best to clean a public toilet with, (and quikly!) sorry! i am new to this issue, and refuse to put my kid on an unclean toilet!

your "help in the list section" you speak of is selling a book! i am an unemployed mom, that cant afford anything; thats why i am asking for help here! need a real parents advise, not a book. + i hate to read! can someone help me with some real advise please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow - if I didn't know better I would have thought this was my poste :) My son is 3 and he is still not potty trained - he will sit forever on the toilet ( without doing anything) as soon as I put him in a pullup - he goes!!!!!! I read that the average age for training boys was 39 months - boys are harder - so I am trying not to get too stressed but it is hard!! I am ready for him to get out of diapers, but I too and not at all thrilled about the use of public restrooms - I don't sit on them myself either - I don't want to traumatize him with my germophobia, bu I can see that as a whole other problem :)

I have a 2 1/2 son who is day potty-trained. I also come from a big family (18 kids) so my mom was a GREAT resource. She told me a few things were key.
1) Make sure he really is showing signs that he is interested. This could be asking about it, wanting to try sitting on the potty, hiding before he poops in his diaper. This is key because once you start you don't want to give up. It will be much harder to try the next time. 2) Switch to underwear right away when you are at home. This feels so much different, and kids don't like to make their whole outfit wet. It also shows you right away when there has been an accident.
3) Set a timer and take hime when it goes off. This helped me so much because I would get distracted in the beginning. In the beginning my son refused to tell me if he had to go, but he would go if I put him on.
4) Reward him for going!!!! This can be stickers, a small candy, a snack, whatever. You know what your son likes. Even better, praise him too. Cheer, clap your hands, say, "I'm soooo proud of you, what a big boy, etc." My son actually liked that better than any prize I gave him. I also think this is why my siblings potty train so quickly. Every time they go potty there is a whole roomful of people applauding. :)
