I desperately need potty training advice

This is my third child, so I have done this before successfully.  However, I have a 3-1/2 year old boy who has got to be the most "potty resistant" child I have ever met.  I don't now if it is stubbornness or what.  He hates to have his hands dirty or to even have a hair on them, but he would sit in pee and poop all day and could care less.  I  have acted as if I didn't care whether he went to the potty or not, but this is really starting to become embarrassing.  I have tried all the tricks.  I have praised him, stickers, potty charts, let him pick out his own potty, cherrios, peer support, etc. etc.  Anything and everything that worked for my other two children has not worked with him.

I guess I need a pep talk.  I don't know whether to just give up and go back to diapers for a while or if that will make it even worse, i.e. that is what he wants, diapers.

 HELP!  Any advice???

You might want to try the plastic underwear or even ask his DR or try taking away the toy he loves most or if there is a movie or tv show he watches everyday dont let him or you might can just make him sit on it all day until he does finally go. but good luck

Hey Michelle,

If he's afraid of germs or thinks the potty is dirty how about a "seat cover" that he gets to choose...

Or...Give him a "book rack" so while he's on there he's distracted by reading & not obsessed with the task...

Third: Don't talk about all the time ~ He's feeling pressured...

Good Luck.

My son was the same way. I had him in diapers and switched him to pull-ups and he still kept going in them. I finally got brave and bought big boy underwear. When we were at home that is what he wore. He would feel the difference of the wetness and the other and decided he did not like the feeling. Yes it is kind of messy but that actually did the trick and also there is a video made by sesame street with elmo learning about the potty. There are also lots of books about going potty and how to go without it being messy or gross...good luck!

my sons FAVORITE thing is air hockey. He gets to play with his little air hockey game for 5 minutes whenever he goes potty on the potty....THATS THE ONLY TIME! I keep it out where he can see it for a little more added incentive!
