Breastfeeding and fussiness
My husband thinks my breastmilk may be the source of my sons gas and fussiness and thinks I should stop and give him just formula, but it really bums me out to even think that that may be the case. We are vegetarians and eat a lot of foods like broccoli, beans and such and I can't take them out of my diet, they ARE my diet! I need to eat healthy too! What should I do!!! Help!!!

when i was breastfeeding my son i had to stay away from those foods. its not fun exspesally if your a vegatarian. i ended up having to stop because i was bleading so much and it was gross to see him have red milk. ewww. i wish i could have still breastfead him, but he does great with the formula, he eats more and is sleeping longer, so you need to decide what you want to do, give up gassy foods or eat them and breastfead. its a hard one. and formula can be expencive. it might just be worth it to temporaraly take those foods out of your diet. plus you could just eat more salads.

You need to speak to your doctor about changing your diet. Your baby is most likely allergic to something you are eating.

I go to the doctor again on the 22nd so hopefully he will have some advice and maybe even a solution.

My son reacts to certain leafy veggies and also broccoli...I try to slow down on those, but it seems as though with time he is getting accustomed to it. Spinach is impossible though, he gets completely constipated and gassy from it. I don't know how old your son is but mine was extremely gassy until about 2 months then it settled. My only thought with formula is that they tend to get gassy from that too especially in the beginning...but do check with your doctor and maybe try to slow down on certain veggies to see if one is worse than the other. Good luck!

Funny you should mention spinach. That's all I ate when I was pregnant! I craved it like most woman crave chocolate! I still really crave it now. My son is a month and half so hopefully he will settle @ 2 months too!

Aww Tiffany, I hope you don't give up on nursing. Breastmilk is the perfect food for your baby.
My advice, for what it's worth, is to keep a food diary and see what foods specifically are making him gassy. Then cut back on those foods.
And Camilla is right - until he's two months, he may just be gassy/fussy. I know that my youngest two were/are.
With CJ, who is 6 weeks now, I have had to cut out acidic foods and pretty much anything green. BUT, once he hits the 2 month mark, I plan on slowly reintroducing them to see what he can handle.
Contact your local LLL - they are a wonderful resource for nursing moms.
www.llli.org is their website.

Broccoli, cauliflower, beans are gaseous foods. Those do affect your baby, since your breastfeeding. The pediatricians informed me of what kinds of foods affect & how they effect baby. Sounds like somethings gotta go Vegetarian diet/ Breastfeeding. Talk with a dietician, or your pediatrician to check for other options. Good luck with that. God Bless.
