30 Minute Naps... Need advice

Hi everyone,

I am wondering if anyone has experienced what I am going through with my 5 1/2 month old daughter.  Basically, it is extremely difficult to put her down for a nap, and when she does fall asleep she will only stay asleep for 1/2 hour (on the dot!), after which she seems incapable of putting herself back to sleep.  I have read practically every book ever printed on how to teach a baby to sleep, and we have tried several different methods, but nothing seems to solve Abbie's nap problem.  It is strange, since her night sleeping is so far pretty good, and she is able to get back to sleep after her 1 o'clock feeding without much fuss (we put her back in her crib awake).

Ideally, she will awake at 30 or 45 minutes no matter what, but should be able to get herself back to sleep for a longer nap...  Is this something that she will overcome as she gets older, or has anyone tried a particular technique or method that succesfully and consistently got their babies to nap and overcome their sleep cycle interruption?  Any advice or suggestion is greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks!

I am sure she is fined. It will change when she gets a little older. It always changes.

I am going through the same thing with my daughter. I am lucky if she sleeps for an hour! Only diference is I have to put her to bed completely asleep or else she will scream and she doesn't calm herself at all. I am hoping that this is a phase because I can't get much done during the day with her not taking very many naps.

My daughter naps alright.... as long as she is in my arms! I can't even think about putting her down. I did today for the first time in her crib after 20 minutes in my arms she stayed asleep for about 15-20 minutes. On the upside she just laid in her crib and babbled for an additional 10-15 minutes so I was able to talk with my husband and do dishes. But she almost never sleeps longer than 20-45 minutes 3 times a day. If you find a solution please post it :) I would love to get things done at home I have to constantly hold her. (4 1/2 months)

Oh my God is not only my daughter.... she is 6 months and she still doesn't nap for more than 30 m. I guess I just let her be instead of seeing her cry.

I've been going through the same thing with my daughter....She can't get herself back to sleep during the day but at night she is an absolute charm. Recently I've tried going up into her room when she wakes herself up, picking her up, cradling her with a receiving blanket over her head (to keep away the distractions) until she falls asleep again and then I put her down. She will sometimes (not always) sleep for an additional hour or longer. The 20 minutes I spend to get her back to sleep is worth the possibility of an hour to myself. Good luck....I am also hoping every day that this stage passes!!!!!

When I was going through this with my 4 month old daughter I read somewhere that just because babies may stir or cry after 30 minutes doesn't mean they are ready to be up! Give her an opportunity to sleep a little more and chances are you'll find she's not done sleeping yet! I don't know if your little one takes a paci but I started going in and giving it to her and giving her the chance to fall back asleep. She is now 10 months old and takes 2 2-hour naps a day! It took a lot of patience but was definitely worth it. Good luck...!

Im wondering if this a a girl thing. My niece was the same way. From the day she was born it was 15 minute nap here, 20 minute nap there, but only about 2-3 times in the day, and then didnt sleep well at night either. I hate to tell you this, but by the time she was about 7 or 8 months, the naps where gone. Shes 7 now, and still just a bundle of energy! It could be partly personalitly.
