cradle cap
my son caden had cradle cap pretty bad and while he was sleeping i gently scraped almost all of it off of the top of his head.  when finished, i ran my fingers through his hair to lift the loose flakes and strands of his hair were coming out with the scales and when i saw this, i stopped and left it alone.  he still had alot of hair up there...no bald spot that i could see.  this happened about 1 week ago, and ever since then, his hair comes out on his comb, and in your fingers if you run them through his hair.  he now has a huge bald spot going on the right side of his head (on top) from his bangs back to the crown.  he was born with a full head of hair (see his photos in my album) and i am worried.  i had him at the doctor today, and the doctor says this is very common in infants...common for them to lose some of their hair at about 3-4 months and that it'll grow back.  well i could see if it thinned out evenly, that being normal, but his did not.  picture all of the hair on top of his head (which is now 2 inches long), well the whole one side of the top is missing. sorry for the long "story" here, but sometimes hearing that others experienced the same thing you have...helps.  i also read that hair loss is common with cradle cap.  is there anyone out there that had this same (or similar) experience whether it be with cradle cap or not.  please help!!!

My son had cradle cap when he was 3 months old. He also had/has eczema and he broke out in little baby pimples all at the same time. I kept thinking what happened to my adorable little bundle of joy. I used baby oil and a soft baby brush to get out the cradle cap. Well, it worked and it took out his hair too. My son didn't have much to begin with and it is a light color. Yours is probably more noticable because your son has a lot of hair and it's dark. It did eventually grow back, but I know how you feel!

Hello Greta,
Yes it it common for baby's to loose their hair when they have cradle cap.. i have 2 children a girl and a boy and they both had the same thing,,, what i did was give them a warm bath and after wards i would use baby oil and a very soft baby comb,, that did work very well and yes the hair came off but grew back very nicely on both of them,,, my daughter is now 10 and her hair is wayyyy past her bottom,, and my son is 6 and i have to take him to get a hair cut almost every week hahaha,,, so yeah its normal,,,as for me my mom told me that i had cradle cap and she did the same to me when i was a baby ,, i then had jet black hair and a full head of it and it ALL fell of! but when it grew back it was honey colored and now i have golden brown hair,,,, so dont worry,, its ok it will grow back,,,,

My blonde daughter was born with really thick black hair. Her black hair fell out with cradle cap and blonde hair grew in. It really is nothing to worry about.

My son is 3 months now, and is just developing some cradle cap. I've read all the ways to take care of it, but my question is...do you have to? I mean, will it hurt him to just let it stay? As long as he's clean and lotioned?

Hi Greta! Cradle Cap is common and nothing to worry about! Yes, it can be fustrating. When you shampoo his hair use a baby brush and gently scrub his head. Do not put anything on it. That can cause irritation, it is best to keep it dry. It is also common for baby hair to fall out in different areas of the head. Even for babies born with a lot of hair. My daughter was born with 3 inch long black hair and by the time she was 6 months all that hair had fallen out with new in its place.

Good Luck!
