CARSEAT ISSUES...

My 3 year old daughter has figured out how to unbuckle her buckle to her carseat, the piece that goes across her chest and I don't know how to keepher from doing this because she does this while we are driving and I just want her to be safe. Does anyone else have this problem or have any advice or suggestions?? I would truly appreciate it!

 Thanks Christine

I have 2 suggestions for you.

1. The first thing you should do is get a toy car and some other toys and play a game involving a naughty child does not do up their seatbelt. Explain why they should wear the seatbelt and also that all grown up children, and adults do this. Explain to your daughter how much you love her and how proud of her you are that she is big enough to understand that it is very important to be safe whilst travelling in the car.

2. Make a fake trip (library, trip round the block..). Before leaving the house explain to your daughter AGAIN exactly why she has to wear a seatbelt and that the punishment for undoing the seatbelt will be to go home. When she unbuckles the seat, park the car, explain that she would have gone to the park/library/fun place but she will have to be 'punished', do her up and then go home. Tell her how much you love her, but that it is not safe to travel without a seatbelt.

The idea that she will miss out on fun things if she does not do as she is told will encourage her to behave. It may take one or two 'fake' trips to get it right, but it WILL work (promise, I'm a nursery nurse..I've had training!!!).

When she manages a whole trip without unbuckling her belt, reinforce your pride in her, and congratulate her on being such a big, grown up girl.

Good luck,

French Mommy
