My Thoughts on Homeschooling |
My Thoughts on Homeschooling Talking to people from all walks of life, I have found that there are so many thoughts about homeschooling. Some say it's the only way to go, while others would never consider it. Still there are even more people I have found that simply have mixed emotions about the subject. Here's my take on homeschooling. 1. Homeschooling is NOT for everyone. Some parents are teachers while some are not. Some parents have a high tolerance of their children while some do not. Some parents are patient while some are not. What is my point? NOT all parents are meant to homeschool their children. Just b/c I homeschool my children does not mean I necessarily think all parents should. On the contrary, I have seen in cases where that would be both a bad idea for the children & the parents for a variety of reasons. 2. Homeschoolers does NOT always equal anti-social. Homeschoolers can be just as social if not even more social than any other children. So, what is the deciding factor here? It's the parents. I have worked with adults that were homeschoolers that were shut out from others for different reasons, & b/c of it, these adults didn't have a clue how to deal with people. Why? It was b/c they did ever have a chance to learn how to. On the other hand, I have also worked with other adults that were homeschoolers that were more social than I could ever dream of. The difference was how much their parents made them have opportunities to become social people within society. 3. Not all parents homeschool their children for religious reasons. For instance, the reason why I homeschool my children is b/c my boys are happier & love to learn while they are being homeschooled. We also have more freedom to advance or slow down when it is necessary for them. 4. Homeschooling DOES NOT have to be expensive. In fact, I've been able to find ways to either get teaching materials for free or low cost. It takes a lot of seaching at times, but it can be done within a tight budget. Trust me. I know this from experience. ;-) 5. Homeschooling your children can be time consuming. Don't let anyone tell you any different. A parent that is homeschooling has to make time to do lesson plans, teach, explain, research, ect. This isn't something you can do overnight. It does take up a lot of time. After reading this, if you haven't figured it out, I am a homeschooling parent. However, I would like to think I am realistic as well. I know what is right for my family isn't going to be right for everyone else's family. I don't judge others for their choices, and all I ask is that others don't judge mine. There is enough room in the world for a variety of people. So, rather than make homeschooling an ISSUE between parents, just look it as a way of living for some families just like the choice to go to a certain church or celebrate certain holidays. Well, those are my thoughts on homeschooling. What about you? What are your thoughts about homeschooling? |
