No News Is Good News
The way I understood it as a child: All news is bad. The way I understand it now: If there is no news, then that is good news. Either way - I do NOT like to watch the news. None of it is good, therefore if there is none of it, then that's good! Politics (which comprises about 75% of news) is just annoying power games played by people who think they can have a huge impact on an even huger world - and who couldn't be more wrong about it. My viewpoint is that the world has to go to literal Hell in a handbasket before the Lord is going to do anything to change it for the better. It says so in the Bible, so why pussyfoot around with trying to make the world better, when what we really want is for it to get worse, so Christ can come back and ultimately establish a New Kingdom. That's what I want anyway. Entertainment-related news (which comprises about 75% of local and national news, and some world news) are voyueristic looks at the unpleasant happenings in the lives of people we envy or can't stand. It's none of our business anyway! Crime-news (90% of local and national news) - BTW, I'M NOT GOING FOR AN EVEN 100% WITH THESE PERCENTAGES; THEY ARE SIMPLY MY OWN EXTREMELY BIASED TAKE ON WHAT I SEE). Crime-news: increasing crime, who committed the crime, how awful the crime was, the victims'/survivors' take on the crime, watch out for the person who committed the crime, and the application or lack of justice in any particular case of crime. It's depressing, scary, and hopeless. Sports is partially ok; as long as they stay away from anything resembling politics, entertainment or crime-news. Except it's just plain boring to me - so I don't watch it either. Weather (15% of news unless it is news then it's 75% of news) just tells us what is going on outside (which we could determine by ourselves by going outside) and what MIGHT happen in the future (which we will know for certain, when the future becomes now, and we can go outside). The only saving grace of the news, weather has developed technology to track storms and forewarn those who might be in danger. In those cases, I have been thankful to heed their future warning of what might happen and take steps to protect myself and my family. Feel-good stories - I don't much care. And no one would care to hear about MY feel-good stories either. They are best left for family reunions and years and years of repetition into family legend. Boy, am I Grinchy about the news! But I don't see the point in becoming frightened by, annoyed by, angry with, or uncomfortably familiar with all the news that is fit to air. I'm more likely to read newspapers, because I can tell by skimming the headlines what I need to overlook. I'm even more likely to review headlines on the Internet because they are available when I'm ready, and again, I can skip what I don't want. I have to admit, though, that I do like to read about businesses and communities expanding, school teams winning tournaments and championships, and the comics are a lot of fun for me. I've enjoyed Dave Barry's humor column over the years, and some of Ann Landers and Dear Abby that wasn't too graphic or silly. I rely on others to tell me if someone I admire passes away, or some other item comes along that is of interest to me. Otherwise, I'm just in the dark a lot. I don't mind it. "I'm in my own little world. It's okay, they know me here!"
