What Went On Today
I was helping with the garden again this evening. My BFF decided that the old fencing on the west side of the garden really needed to be replaced. We had some chain link fencing left over from doing the other three sides on Saturday, so we set out to change the fence. The fence was really old, so the dirt and grass had grown up around the bottom of it. Her dad helped us remove most of the dirt so we could pull the fence out. At one point, we had three 15 year old boys helping us: my son, her son, and her nephew. We worked hard for about an hour and a half, and I was done in. My BFF was pretty tired, too. And the only 15yo who was still going strong was her nephew. So we propped up the new fencing and tacked it into place. Tomorrow, we'll finish the job. I am not a person who does physical things. In school, I would rather read about playing basketball, than actually do it in PE. I'm a known weakling, and get fatigued very easily. But I'm enjoying the gardening stuff so far. I've gotten dirty, and sweaty, used muscles I didn't know I had, and pushed myself to keep going (and then walk a 1/4 mile home). I'm not sure who this strange person is that has taken over my body, but I think I'll just let them do their thing - I might start to like it! AND NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT! (I'm a BIG Monty Python fan) I talked to the kids about homeschooling next year and told them the unschooling thing wasn't going to work out very well for us. My hubby is a little freaked out by it. So I put a stack of homeschooling catalogs and magazines in front of them and told them to write down wha looked good. Bad idea! Not enough information/direction. I got a little information out of them, but not much. I would like to approach it from the viewpoint of what goals they would like to achieve for the coming school year, but any talk of goals with them seems to be spoken in an ancient, unknown language - and since I'm not very good a goals myself, I'm stuck. I know that Daniel wants to do a CSI unit, learn about dogs, learn about cars, and maybe do math on the internet. All Rachel told me was that she wanted to write articles for a newspaper, then she wrote "textbook" on every other subject she could think of. Thank goodness we have all summer to deal with this! And for those of you who are wondering why I don't just pick out curriculum and tell them to do it, I don't believe kids learn best from textbooks. So if we can use alternative means to educate them, I'm all for it.
