Can't be proud? |
One injustice made to a group of people at one period in history does not justify or diminish the suffering of another group of people at another time.
There have been persecutions along religious, ethnic or racial line along the centuries. Clearly, whatever it is closer to our historic memory makes it more relevant in our today's society.
The history of black slavery in America still has an influence on the kind of society America is today, I don't think the white slavery has the same relevance.
About being proud, I guess anyone can be proud of whatever they wants. However, being proud of belonging to a race has somehow a political connotetion to which many people will frown upon.
Having said that I welcome any open conversation about any issue, part of the problem with race relations is that people are so afraid to say the wrong thing that they avoid the issue all together which does not help to build understanding.

I read in a woman's Journal (not this site) about how proud she was to be white. She posted a poem which headed "Proud to be White". Some of the responses she got was outrageous to me. She was attacked from white women only because of the slurs that was used.( if you have a problem with just the slurs, then you have even bigger problems in your life) She was attacked from black women b/c one woman asked her why she was proud to be white and what did white people have to be proud of? I was floored. She was told by others that many associate White Pride with the KKK. And that's it's one thing to be proud of your heritage..German/ Irish/ Indian, but to be proud of just being white is not understandable. But as I read, they are just proud to be black. No Jamaica/German whatever.... just plain black. Now, I've been around and know for a fact of the different cultures AA people have and it's not just black. They too have different heritages other than just being black. But yet it seems okay to be proud if you're black, but not okay if your proud be white?? I'm confused?!!
How can you not be proud of who you are? Now, Here's my stance on it......
Many white people know where they came from.....German/Irish/Indian etc. But many of us don't get into all that. We consider our self just white people. I'm proud to say I'm white. I don't think that makes me racist at all. When I say I'm proud to be white, I'm talking about being proud of myself, who I am, what I've accomplished, and where I came from. And others consider this racist? I am by no means a racist person. My husband is AA, my children are mixed.
I refuse to suffer from what my ancestors might have done?? I know not ALL white people owned slaves or even agreed with it. So we can't be proud of who we are as a white person because of it? I don't believe so. I am proud to be white. We as white people have accomplished sooo much and I can't be proud of that? Am I not suppose to teach my children about where I from and what all we've did? We're just suppose to focus their attention on there daddies side, b/c they may have had it harder? Did anyone know they had white slaves? (COLUMBUS, Ohio – A new study suggests that a million or more European Christians were enslaved by Muslims in North Africa between 1530 and 1780 – a far greater number than had ever been estimated before.)
You can read the rest of that here.... http://researchnews.osu.edu/archive/whtslav.htm
Oh yeah... I also read where some are trying to minimize that very fact.
(The Establishment has created the misnomer of "indentured servitude" to explain away and minimize the fact of White slavery)
You can read that one here..

I think we should ALL have the right to be proud of who we are, even if it's the color of our skin. That doesn't make you a racist.
