That ammount of sleep does not seem enough for a baby but there are kids with that sleep pattern. Is he crancky? Does he look tired? Does he seem that his sleeping hours are satisfactory? Vero

Read BABYWISE. I worked in daycare when I had my daughter. There was a baby boy in my class who was always happy, ate well, and slept great. I asked his mom for her secret and she said this book. (it was recomended to her from a friend who also had an "easy baby") Of course you have to adapt it to you, your family, and your child, but that book saved my sanity. It talks about the importance of an eat, play, sleep schedule. We satrted doing it when my daughter was 4wks old. She is 21mths old now and has slept through the night since 5 weeks old. Hope it helps

I understand your tiredness completely...it wasn't until my son was 3 weeks old that I finally took him to my mom and made her care for him so I could sleep. He was sleeping for 30 minutes every few hours...so I got NO sleep. FINALLY when he was 4 months old my doctor dropped the whole colic and gas diagnosis and sent him for a reflux test...sure enough he has it....since he started on Zantac, it took about 2 weeks but he finally started sleeping better. Turns out he was so uncomfortable there was nothing I could do to make him feel better without that medicine. He is now 17 mos old and sleeps from 6pm-7am every day and takes a 1 1/2 hour nap....BUT he's still on the zantac because every time I try to take him off of it...he gets crabby.

Sounds familiar! My baby did not start sleeping through the night until he was 1 year old and he still wakes up at 5am:) He started sleeping better when we were able to switch to cow's milk at a year. Sleep when the baby sleeps even if it is just 30 minutes. Go to bed when the baby goes to bed. I know its tiring, but it won't last forever!

my baby is 14 months old and still wakes up 2 or 3 times a night for a bottle and since she's soo small I'm afradi to cut her off because I don't want her to loose weight. But it was a nightmare the first year with out sleeping well and having no one to help or take over. I don't know how I did it.

My son had reflux and didn't start sleeping through the night until he was about 14 months old. He was on Enfamil AR formula (some insurance companies will cover) which helped him keep fluid down. He also always had a pillow to prop him up to help with the reflux. I didn't think he would ever sleep through the night!! I was a zombi! He sleeps through the night (w/ bottle) but I always take the bottle away once he's asleep. IF he doesn't go back to sleep when he wakes up in the middle of the night I give him water with a little flavoring and he falls right back to sleep without rotting his teeth. Being outside with the cold or warm definatley helps and they tend to sleep longer. Hang in there! Just remember there is light at the end of the tunnel!!!

I have a 5 week old baby who has done nothing but scream and scream since we got home from the hospital!!! We tried switching formulas, but that only made things so much worse!! Finally we took her to the doctor two days ago and they told us she had colic and reflux, they gave her zantac, and told us there was nothing we could do for the colic. They suggested using peppermint tea and classical music, so I went home and tried it. It was of coarse no help!!! Yesterday my inlaws called, they see a chiropractor and told her about our problem, they told us that the chiropractor could cure her. I was thinking yeah right, but I was too my wits end and figured it couldn't hurt, what was she going to do scream more? So we rushed to their office and they saw us right away! This was about 4:30 yesterday afternoon. I'm not exactly sure what she did to her, because it just looked to me like she was rubbing her back, she didn't pop her bones like I thought was going to happen. Anyways I think she performed some kind of miracle, because since then my baby has seemed more relaxed, and she has only cried because her diaper was dirty or she was hungry!! I actually got to sleep in my bed last night!!! This has been the first time we have had any peace since we came home from the hospital!!! I'm not saying that everyone should do this, but if you are as frustrated as I was, and you can't think of anything else, it is worth a try!!

Our 11 month old boy still doesn't sleep through the night. He wakes up about three times wanting a bottle. He went through a stage at about three or so months where he only wanted to sleep on his stomach. Being so frightened about the risk of SIDS, I would let him sleep on his stomach next to me, while I read or watched TV. At this point, sleeping in his crib became intolerable for him, because he would try to roll over onto his stomach and startle himself. We put him in his stroller one night, and he slept so well. I think he felt very secure, and he couldn't roll over. Well, that's where he slept for the next few moths! We were embarrassed to tell people, but our pediatritian said he wasn't worried about it. Now I'm sleeping with him on our bed, hubby in the livingroom, and he has taken very well to it. He still wakes up about three times, and he tosses and turns in every direction without waking up, but it's a step in the right direction I think. I'm wondering if we'll ever get any use of the crib!

My sister recommended Baby Wise to me but I felt it was too strict a regimine for me and it didn't fit the personality of the kind of Mother I wanted to be. There are 2 books that I found to be very helpful (1)The No Cry Sleep Solution (because I didn't like that everyone else was telling me that I had to let my baby cry in order for him to have a routine bedtime) and (2nd) The Happiest Baby On The Block.

I would also recommend The Happiest Baby on the Block book. I never knew swaddling could work so well. With my first that was the magic trick until he could roll over. My second also had colic, we switched to Similac Alimentum (that is expensive!) but he was still crying uncontrollably at times and not sleeping but about 2-3hrs a time still by 4months..I finally went to our new dr (we had just moved) and told him that something was wrong with my baby, that I know a baby cry from a health issue cry. He told me that usually when a mom says this it is either allergies / reflux. He started him on Zantac and baby has been sleeping well ever since. It was confusing because mine didn't vomit or even spit up more than normal babies, just the crying and not sleeping. I was more exhausted than i have ever been in my life!! I still remember those months with pain and that was supposed to be such a happy time like it was with my first.
So any mommas out there with colicky babies, try the Zantac if your dr is willing. A simple solution for a mind-numbing , zombie producing problem(you not the baby). My little boy has been such a happy baby since then and the whole family has benefited from his good health:)
