Speech

My daughter is 2 and 1/2 and receives speech 2 times a week for a year.  While she has made a lot of progress, we still are only on one words, no combined words.  She also whines a lot to get her words across, but gets so worked up that she can't get the words out.  it is really frustrating.  I tell her to use her words, all the time.  She repeats a lot of words to and get so worked up to say them.  I love her very much and would do anything for her, but it has been a long road and I really thought we be talking by now and not continuing this getting worked up and the whining.  I understand she is 2, but this is been going on since birth. So I think its developmental.  Is anyone going through this or have some thoughts would be great.

I would first and formost have her checked by a doctor to make sure it is not developmental if it is maybe they could make a recommendation for her. If not my son was speech delayed when he was 2 to 3 years old. We had to put him in speech in the local school district, he had major improvement it was my fault that he was the way he was. He is an only child and early and being that I always knew what he wanted he didnt have to tell me so it made the problem worse and he would get upset when he could not get his point across to me. A suggestion would be that you check into the school districts speech programs or check into something called early childhood intervention they have wonderful programs. When she asks you for something like milk instead of making her say the word say to her oh would you like a glass of milk. Hope this helps a little.

My sister is going to turn 16 in September. She has mental disabilities and has always had trouble communicating with us. The only think I have to say is to take it slow, she's getting just as frustrated as you are if not more. Just remain calm and try to work with her on what she's trying to say. The more worked up you get the more worked up she'll get and that won't help anybody. I wish you luck.

start teaching her sign language. Find vidoes that are easy for her and you to learn at the library or online. It made a HUGE difference in my asberger son. He didnt even make noise till he was 2. With the vidoes and speech/language thereapy he is now 6 years old and has above average language skills. He puts sentences together that a lot of 3rd graders dont. Some reason it helps, Ive seen it many times. Good luck and have fun with it!

oh, and Im talking about BASIC signing. You dont have to sit down with her and teach her, just as you do something during the day, take a couple things and just sign it as you speak it. She will pick up on the fast. Next thing you know, she will just do it one day. Also make sure caregivers and other relitives know about what signs she does know, so they can be aware and help out too.

I second the Signing approach. Using more than one kind of communication will be helpful. You can also have flashcards with home made pictures that your little one can point to to make it clear as well. I have used cheap photo books one for Food and drink items to help teach the signs. and you can use other books for anything else you may need like bath, diaper changes, play time, toys.
Good luck.

my son just turned 2 and is doing the same thing. but with him it is a stubborn issue. i have been encouraging him to say words and phrazes but he refuzes. he knows how to whine and get the things he wants from everyone around him except for me. so he has no drive to really talk. i am currently working with him and he is getting better a little bit at a time. he has learned 10 new words in the past 2 months. its hard going but if you keep it up it is worth it in the long run. i hope everything works out for you.
