When to switch to a toddler bed? |
Hi, I have a 15 month old daughter and she is 32 in. tall. I was just wondering when i should switch her from her crib to a toddler bed? I don't want her to try to climb out of her crib and hurt herself. So I was just wondering at what age did you switch your kids to a toddler bed? And how did they do? Thanks! |

We have three children (10, 9, 2-1/2). Transitioning can be a difficult choice. There are pros/cons and other issues to consider before making this move.
First: Is your house safe enough for your toddler to roam around in without supervision? If your daughter gets up and you don't hear her you need to consider what she might do while you're sound asleep. Cast yourself in her spot. If there are things or areas she gets into during the day that are "problems" already then you need to keep those in mind (example: playing in the toilet, jumping on the couch).
Second: Be very realistic about how a toddler bed will dramtically change your current bedtime ritual. From my experience with our older boys, once they knew they could just get back out of bed right after you tucked them in they did it constantly. It was a complete struggle that lasted months. Sure, you can watch Super Nanny all you want for great advise, but be prepared for reality and a long battle.
Third: If you daughter is actively trying to climb out of her crib then you're justified in your concerns about her possibly falling while trying to climb out. Make sure her mattress is on the lowest setting in the crib and remove the bumper if you're still using it. Cribs today tend to be harder to get out of unless you have a real serious climber on your hands. If she's not actively trying to climb out I would be far less concerned about transitioning right now.
Lastly: Any thought of 'sleeping in' while your daughter currently babbles away in her crib in the morning will now be over. She will now be coming to your room and getting you up. No extra shut-eye knowing she's safe and sound just singing to herself in her crib.
Our daughter 2-1/2 is on the petite side, but she is still sleeping in her crib. Her mattress is on the lowest setting in the crib and we removed the bumper maybe six months ago so she couldn't stand on it to leverage herself out of the crib. She was never really into trying to climb out of her crib so that has never been a concern for us. She enjoys her crib. Recently we've had some recent minor resistance about going to bed at night, but she's still has not tried to climb out even though she likely could climb out if she really wanted to. We plan on keeping her in the crib until she's closer to three if possible :)

have you thought about possibly putting a baby gate in her door way? if you make the transition from the crib to toddler bed putting a gate in her door way will keep her safe from roaming the house and possibly doing something that could harm her but also when she wakes she is able to get out of her bed and play with the toys in her room giving her a little independance and also you will know she's safely in her room not getting into something that can possible cause her harm.
just an idea. |
