I started cleaning my baby's gums with my finger before he even had any teeth. Then I used a Gerber soft brush that goes on your finger with non fluoride gel. Once he had a few teeth we graduated to a toothbrush, and when he could walk I had him standing on a stool at the bathroom sink brushing his own teeth- with my help.
when the first tooth comes out, they sell a gerber toothpaste that come with a little blue thing that slips over ur finger and has bristles. they like it because it feels good on their sore teething gums too. Its like 8.00 but it lasts awhile. just throw it out and get a regular toddler toothbrush when they start taking it from you and trying to do it themselves because its too big for their finger, it slips off and will get stuck in their mouth/throat

I also used the little brush that goes over the finger way before my daughter had teeth too. She loved it. Now she has 4 teeth and I use a little brush made of "plastic." Babbies R Us sell all different ones.
