Preparing for the cold... |
Now living in the Northeast, my wife and I dread the seemingly infinite long winters here. Getting snow (good fluffy stuff) opens up fun possibilities for the outdoors. But we were wondering how others deal with the cold conditions, forced to being cooped up more often than not, and what indoor activities are done to keep from getting bored. Thanks for any and all suggestions! |

Get involved in playgroups so you can get yourself and child out of the house and socializing with others. Sign up for classes at places like Gymboree or the YMCA.
Check with the local libraries. Most have story time and activities for kids. Go to the mall so you both get some exercise without dealing with bad weather. Structure the day so your child looks forward to different activities. Examples include things like art in the morning (finger painting, drawing, coloring, etc...), active play after lunch (dancing with mommy/daddy, playing ball, Simon Says, Hokey Pokey), reading books in the afternoon. |

Great suggestions! Just signed up at a local "Little Gym" (like Gymboree,) so that takes care of one day during the week. Another day our library has story time and other scheduled events. We also love your ideas for morning art activities Jenny, though ours may have to be scheduled more towards the afternoon. I will also be back working out at a gym in the morning that has a babysitting service while you workout. I am a little reluctant to utilize this but think that if I can get past the guilt of "abandonment", my daughter and I would both benefit from a newly implemented routine that includes a social setting and we won't get as much cabin fever this year. Does anyone have any advice for the first time you leave your child among "strangers trained in the art of child care"? How do you ease your child and yourself from the anxiety of leaving them with hired help? How do you persuade a potentially freaked out 17 month old girl that dad is not abandoning her with these people and will be back in an hour? |
