Toddler Sad Over Leaving Best Friends

Hi all,

Over the summer, our family shared an apartment with two of our friends, Kate and Charlie. We spent seven weeks with them, and in that time, my 20 month old son became really close to them. My girlfriend, Kate, was great with my son, and he just adored her. Now we are back home, and I can tell he misses them, and all the fun we had over the summer. Out of nowhere he'll cry out "Kate! Charlie!" or even "I like Kate! I like Charlie!" It breaks my heart to see him miss these two. And since they are moving very far away, I don't know if he'll ever see them again. I don't know quite how to keep the two of them in his life because they are actually moving to another country.

I honestly feel like I should do something to keep them in his happy memory, but I don't know what to do.

Any suggestions?  Thanks!

Do you have pictures of your time together? Make a scrapbook for him to look at. That way he can talk about and relive his fond memories. See if Kate and Charlie can write and send pictures to him when they leave and let him talk to them on the phone or internet. I know he's still really young, but he will get more out of it then you may think. When I taught preschool each child got a scrapbook of their year in school when they left in the summer. They loved them and so did the parents. One boy who is the same age as my sister (16) still has his and says he looks at it from time to time.
