I don’t usually write many blogs, but for anyone that wants to read this, I have to share a recent experience I have had with a company by the name of Avent, and an online only company called Baby Center.com. For those of you that don’t know, Avent manufactures many baby items, including bottles, pacifiers, bottle warmers, etc. Baby Center.com is an online retailer and community of sorts that sells all sorts of items from pregnancy and beyond!
So, lets go back to last September, right before Blake was born. I hadn’t received a breast pump as a gift, so it was getting close to my due date and I needed to get one. After much research on breast pumps, I decided I would go with the Avent Isis IQ Duo. I was planning on using all of the Avent bottles so it made sense. It is the biggest baddest of them all. Retails for about $349. So then I needed to find the best price, and Babycenter.com had it on sale and I got a smoking deal of $220! Now lets fast forward a few months to March 2008. I had been using my pump for months now with no problems. I liked it just fine. It did it’s job, so what more could I ask for? Well one day my pump went on the fritz and lets just say it was not working properly. (I will spare you the details.) So I made sure to read the troubleshooting guide to make sure it wasn’t an error of my own. Since I couldn’t remedy the situation I called Avent. After sitting on hold for what seemed an eternity (but really only like 30 min.) I got to talk to someone about my psycho pump. Since Avent only warranties their pumps for one year, the lady wanted either a copy of my order receipt or the date of manufacture stamp on the motor. I didn’t have the order receipt, so we went off the date of manufacture, and that said it was manufactured in Jan. 2007. So, that was just over a year. But the lady decided to be nice and help me out anyway. She said it was either the tubing or the motor, so she would send me out new tubing and if that didn’t fix it I needed to call them back and send them the motor. Once they get the old motor from me they would send me a new one. So, I would be without my pump for weeks. The lady told me it would take about a week to 10 days to get the parts to me. So after two weeks I called Avent again referencing the call I had made two weeks prior. And she told me the parts were on back order and she didn’t know when they would be in. I finally got the new parts four weeks later. Ugh! So, the new tubing did fix the current problem. But now I have another problem with my pump. (once again, I will spare the details) So I decided to call Avent once again about my issues with the pump, and I got a weird ‘leave a voicemail’ message. I assume their office was closed, must be on the East Coast. Anyway, I decided to call Babycenter.com to see if they could get me a copy of my order receipt so I don’t have any issues with trying to get help from Avent. I call Babycenter and wasn’t on hold a moment! I got to talk to someone right away. I explained my situation and that I just needed a copy of my order receipt. The lady on the phone told me that she would be happy to get me a copy of that, but if I wanted they could send me a brand new pump and I could send the other one back to them, at no cost to me. She continued to explain their ‘100% Satisfaction Guarantee’ to me. ‘Even a breast pump?’ I asked. ‘Yes,’ she said, ‘even a breast pump’. So while I am sitting on the phone with my mouth hanging open she explains to me my options. I can either have them send me another Avent pump, exactly like the one I have or I can return the old pump and get my money back! I was given so many options at that point I didn’t know what to say to her. I did only call to get a copy of my receipt. I asked her if I could call back after I had given it some thought, and she said that would be fine. I called back the next day and decided to get another one of the same pump. It was a tough decision, but that is what I decided. I should be getting my new pump within a few days, I am way excited! It is really nice to know that there are some companies out there that do business like this. I know most places won’t even take returns with out a receipt, and even then it has to be ‘new and unopened’. Don’t even think about returning something because it doesn’t work, that isn’t their problem. Contact the manufacturer. And when you do, they don’t seem to care either. That is just the way the world works, right? |
