Preschooler and staying dry at night

Hi. I had a very difficult time potty training my son. We started arount 2 1/2 and he was having pee pee accidents for a while. Even up to this day sometimes and now he is 4 1/2. He still wears a pull up at night. How should I start training him at night again ? When is the right time ? I don't want him to feel pressured. We tried a while ago and he stayed dry for a week at a time but he kept having accidents so we put him back in pull ups. I never thought potty training would be so difficult. It also makes you feel worse when parents tell you "my daughter/ son taught themselves how to go to the bathroom." I understand every child is different and we have to have patience but it is frustating and I would greatly appreciate advice from other parents who dealt with this already.
