Potty Training
My son is 2 and I am trying to potty train him.  Should boys learn to sit or stand at first?  He has no problem sitting on the potty or standing up on a stool up to the potty but nothing has happened.  Any advice on how to explain to him that he can actually "go" in the potty?

Dear Gina, As a preschool teacher, I witnessed both. The more common situation was for boys to start potty training by sitting, but that's probably because mommies are usually the one's teaching them how to go potty on the potty... so, who knows! I'm guessing it's preference. Whatever he wants to do, encourage him to do it. If he's getting potty trained at 2, you're way ahead of the game (in this day-n-age).

If you're really serious about getting him potty trained, the best thing you can do is take him completely out of diapers/training diapers. One week (maximum... usually closer to two or three days) of having "accidents" and kids don't have accidents anymore. It's a pain in the butt to be on clean up duty, but it works!!! Diapers are just TOO GOOD at what they do these days! Think back to old-fashioned diapers (cloth)... that's why we were potty trained so much earlier back then!!! Who wants to sit in a wet cloth for any length of time?!?!

:-D Good luck! ~Jamie

I totally agree with Jamie! I too have my early childhood degree and have potty trained one boy. The worse thing was using pullups. We started with sitting and I let my husband be in charge of introducing standing to potty. Now it is his choice, he is now 3 1/2. About getting him to go...try running water, have him go right away in the morning and every couple of hours in between. Good luck and hang in there!!

Maybe try making a game out of it. Put a cheerios in the toliet and tell him to try to hit the cheerios or maybe empty the bowl out and put a small dab of finger nail polish on the back of the bowl and tell him to try to hit it. If that doesn't work and I'm sorry, I'm out of suggestions.
