Sleeping through the night? |
Hi! I have a 15 week old and he was starting to sleep 6-7 hours at a time for a few weeks, falling asleep around 8 or 9 and sleeping until 2 or 3. I would then breastfeed him and he would go back to sleep until between 6 or 7. The last week or two he is back to waking up 2-3 times a night, either to eat or for the pacifier. He's also chewing on his hand, my shoulder, my fingers, anything he can and hard and is starting to drool. Any chance he could be teething already?? Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! |

It is possible that he is teething, my daughter started around that age. I noticed with my daughter she would wake up more to eat during a growth spurt. She would also wake up a lot when she became more aware of her surroundings and when learning new things. I always wait a few minutes to see if she goes right back to sleep and then I check on her. Most of the time I can rub her back while she falls back to sleep or I hold her for a few minutes. I never liked the "cry it out" it doesn't work for me. |

Thanks so much for your response Jackie. I'm struggling with the crying out idea too. I haven't really tried, but know it would be so hard. I'm reading "healthy sleep habits, happy child" and Dr. Weisbluth seems to be a fan of it, though he never says so. That's just my impression. How long do you wait before going in? Does your daughter use a pacifier? Do they go through a growth spurt at about 4 months? |

I usually wait about 5 minutes sometimes less depending on the cry. Before you know it you will recognize the different cries. Sometimes I will just peek in the crib to be sure she didn't get a leg or arm stuck, her crib has openings between the bars. I didn’t read any of the books that are out there, I would skim them in the book store and never found any I liked. My daughter still uses her pacifier for naps and night time, but spits it out once she is asleep. She doesn't wake for it anymore. As for the growth spurts, they come at different times for all babies. I would notice that she eats a lot during them even during the day (still does). I started a routine at about 6 months, at night time I would give her a bath, read a book and then she would drink her bottle and go to bed. You may want to start something like that. I think most of the time when they wake up at night while they are so young is usually because they are hungry or wanting the pacifier. I mostly don't like the "cry it out" because it causes a lot of stress, crying is the only way for a baby to communicate even if it is just to be held. Check in the list section on this site, I am sure there are some books listed with some comments. There are so many out there, lol. |
