What to do with a hyperactive 1 year old

Well I could just cry, my son is so difficult lately. He is 16 months and can not stop for one second. He is on the go from the minute he wakes up, and into everything that is not allowed. He could care less about any toys, he wants cell phones, remote controls, screwdrivers(which I take immeditaly). I can not get him to sit down long enough to even read a book with him. He will not watch any baby shows on TV. I am worried that he will not learn things other kids his age do because he will not let me read to him or watch educational programs. Any advice from some other mommies would be very much appreciated.

Hi. I am a first time mom of a 20 month old little boy. One thing I have learned about boys is that they never sit! I was having the same feelings you were, worried about him not sitting ever, I couldn't, and still cant get him to take the time out to color. Once he hit about 19 months, he slowed down a bit. He now brings books to me to read to him and will listen to them the whole way through. He is now obsessed with the Baby Einstein movies. Once they hit that place where they can concentrate better things change. Hope this helps. Best of Luck!

Relax, You really need to sit back and take a big, deep breath. Every child learns differently. Your son is probably a sensory learner, most small children are. I have found that with taking things away from children, you need to make sure that you give him another option. If he has a scewdriver, try giving him something else that is shiny that he can play with, like a pan.
The world is so new and exciting to small children and believe it or not he is learning. Try new things with him. My 13 month old loves sitting in his high chair with his floaty letters and a shallow bowl of water, he his learning about the shapes of letters and the feel of wet objects and it is fun to splash. it also gives me time to clean the kitchen for a minute. Babies naturally have a rather short attention span and they learn by doing and exploring their world. It is okay that he won't sit to listen to a book, he will when it is interesting to him. I talk to my children all day, we sing things like the alphabet song and the wheels on the bus. I even talk about the steps to making dinner and what we have to do make brownies. Something else to think about, If you are always taking things away from him, he will learn that when you come towards him that you are going to take something from him, that can cause complicattions later on in life, but if you give him an alternative he will be more likely to comply because he trusts that you are going to provide him with something more interesting. I really hope this works for you. They are only babies once and if you put yourself at his level and try to understand him, it will become easier for you.
