Napping Crisis! Please help! |
Hi everyone. I don't post often but I would really like some advice on napping issues (except to cry it out) My son is 17 months and I think he is ready to do one nap because it's been a battle trying to get him down in the afternoon. I read that children usually give up the morning nap but it hasn't been that way at all and he's driving me nuts. So, I tried to feed him lunch and put him down at around 12:00 but he's getting really difficult to put down at that time, or he will sleep but wake up within 35 to 40 minutes screaming and crying and I have to go soothe him down and then maybe he will sleep for another 20 minutes to half hour. I know this isn't enough sleep because he is getting bags under his eyes. So, we tried to put him down for bed early (6:30) and he's waking up at 5:30 in the morning. This has been going on for the past 3 and a half weeks. How long does it take to get adjusted to a new schedule. I was so frustrated this weekend because he only slept for an hour and he won't go down again. So, this morning, I said **** this and I put him down in the morning and he slept at 9:30. If he's able to go down at 9:30...isn't 12 too late. I've tried to explain to the doctor but either I am not explaining myself well or the doctor isn't understanding because he told me to be "strict" and not go to him until 2 hours. But I can't take that crying, or even I could, which out of frustration, I refused to go, he will calm himself down after 10 or 15 minutes, but won't go back to sleep! HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Has anyone had problems like this? Any insights or advice? |

My son is also having that problem but I let him cry it out and it's not the crying that bothers me, it's the lady upstairs banging on the floor because he's making to much noise. I use to put my son to bed around 8p and that was just too early for him. He would sit in his bed for about an hour refusing to go to bed. Now we put him down at 9p and that seems to work out perfectly for him. As for the one nap, I usually put him down for his nap about 3 hours after he gets up in the morning and he will sleep for 3 hours and he is usually fine until 7p and then he gets really tired and cranky. The only thing I can tell you is that it usually takes a couple of weeks for them to get use to a schedule if you stick with it. |

My son is almost 17 months old and is transitioning to one nap. He has never had a concrete napping schedule and I think that is making it easier. He wakes up anywhere from 5:30 am to 7am. When he is up early he takes a nap at about 10:30 and sleeps for about an hour and then (sometimes) takes another nap around 2 or 3 for about an hour. If he sleeps later, he naps after lunch for about 2 hours, and that seems to work best for him. He has been doing this for about 2 weeks now and is still adjusting. He gets cranky close to bedtime, so sometimes I put him down a little early.
I think that if you delay his morning nap a little, then one nap closer to the middle of the day might work. When he gets cranky in the morning, try just sitting with him and doing quiet activities like reading books for a little while. That down time may help him rest and wait until later for a nap. Then have lunch a little early and lay him down after nap. That is what I try to do and unless my son was up very early, it works. |
