Hi. I'm concerned about my son not walking yet. He cruises on furniture and will only walk with both hands held. THe doctors tell me I should not worry yet. How do I encourage him to try walking??? Any suggestions??
Hi Jennifer,
I couldn't help but respond to your blog. I am a pediatric physical therapist and have been in practice for more than 10 years. WHile i agree with your docotor that at this stages you shouldn't get too worried I am a firm believer in trusting your instincts. I don't know where you live but I am sure there are pediatric physical therapists in your area. Most states allow you direct access to have a therapist evaluate your son without a prescription from your pediatrician. Development is a highly specific field and many pediatricians have little training on developmental milestone ( I know that seems crazy but its true). A specialist such as a developmental pediatrician, physical or occupational therapist can ensure there is nothing bigger going on and provide you with information on how you can encourage your son's independence in walking.
My daughter was a late walker too, she started on her own at about 14 months. I do not disagree with Lisa's responce, but do you have some toys that will encourage his walking? I had gone out and bought a walking/riding toy it helped so much.

Thank you for the input. I really appreciate it. My gut tells me he just needs encouragement. We have hardwood floors throughout the house so I don't know if that is affecting his confidence. He does walk holding with both hands holding a riding toy (its his walker). Its scary to know that pediatricians do not have alot of training in this area. I will check into a physical therapist to put any worries at ease.
