I try to make it into something fun

When they need to clean their messy room. We play Cinderella and I am the evil stepmom who is ordering them to do things. They love it. I also set a timer and see if they can beat the time. I usually allow 5-10 mins for small tasks and 15-20 mins for larger ones. We also play pick 10. They choose 10 items and put them away then they come to me and I say can you do 10more before you know it they're done. The key is to vary it. If you do the same thing all the time they will get bored and loose focus. Also you need to be consistant with your standards. Nothing on the floor means nothing on the floor. or No toys in the room means no toys in the room or put the toys away when you;re finished.
