My kids know I'm reasonable
so they know I don't ask them to do things without reason.  I let them do what they want when there is no good reason not to, so they trust my opinion more and listen when I tell them to do something they don't want to.  I explain my reasoning to them too, so they will understand better and be able to make the same decisions in the future.
