A Relentless Hope : A Book Review |
A Relentless Hope : A Book Review By Cassandra Smith “The voices of father, pastor, and counselor are all well represented by this writer. The personal and professional commitment of A Relentless Hope brings enormous creditability to its message. This book is a work of love about the power of love. And that, in itself, is healing.”-Ruth Harper, Counseling Today, a publication of the American Counseling Association When I first read this quote about the book, A Relentless Hope, by Gary E. Nelson, I was a bit skeptical. Being a person who has suffered with major depression since I was a teenager myself, I have read countless books about how to make the “depressed” person feel “better”. Instead, of an instant “cure” for major depression, this book offers so much more. It offers a true account of a father, pastor, and counselor that has dealt with teenage depression, nothing more and nothing less. One of the positive of this book is that it is easy to read. There are no medical terminologies or jargon that needs to be explained in great detail. Another positive would be for the parent that has so much to do and very little time to spare is that this book is not very long. It only consists of seven chapters and can be read within a week easily. Finally, the best positive of all, is that this book is a message of love, hope, and healing for anyone with or dealing with a person with major depression. The only negative I could spot is that this is not a book for someone that is looking for a “secular” answer or testimony about major depression. Although, I do not feel it is a negative, a person would be looking for a “secular” answer would not be satisfied. Mr. Nelson is a pastor as well as a counselor. Therefore, Christianity is involved within this book. For those who prefer not to have Christianity within their readings, this would not be the book for you. Overall, I believe this book is a MUST read for all parents of teens or future parents of teens. It is definitely a MUST read for anyone dealing with major depression or knows anyone with major depression!!! |
