1 year old napping problems
Most books I have read say that one year olds need two naps of at least an hour!  my son doesn't take a second nap unless I put him in the car seat.  but, if i try to put him down at home around the same time, it's a major battle!  It's the same no matter what...whether he sleeps for one hour in the morning or two or 3.  In the car seat, he will fall asleep at the same time and will sleep at least 50 minutes! i am so frustrated with hearing him crying in the crib and fighting this!  Help!

All babies are different and the books give an average, not a standard that all babies have to follow. If he is getting cranky and appears tired before bed time, put him down a little earlier. If he is refusing to sleep, don't try to force it. You don't want to turn naptime into a negative experience. Just follow his cues. If he is tired lay him down, if not he doesn't need a nap. My son is almost 12 months and he sometimes naps only once a day, sometimes 3 times. I try not to have too strict a schedule because the important thing is that it works for him.

Books are definitly just a guideline. My son is 10 months and takes his first nap routinely and the second is always a matter of how tired he is based on that days activities. I always offer him the second nap but if he is fighting it we just sit in a dim room with minimal stimulation and rock or sing for a little time out and it seems to rejuvinate him just enough to keep him happy until bedtime.
