nursingandpoop

ok my son is 4 months old and exclusively breast feeds.  since birth he has pooped once, maybe twice if i'm lucky, times a week.  my dr. says this is fine. she has examined him many times and says that he is the pinnacle of health, gaining weight and peeing like a horse.  however she is the only person i know who says this is normal.  anyone else care to weigh in?

Hi Melanie,
I had the same problem when Emilie was young. I would give a little water with a bit of prune juice in it which sometimes helped. I think some babies just have a slower system. Once she started eating stage one foods it got better, now it is usually once a day. As long as he is healthy I wouldn't worry too much about it, thats probably just how his system works.

My son was the same way and did not regulate until he started baby food. My Dr. told me to give him sugar water (which I was skeptical about) and IT WORKS but I would only give it to him at the seven day mark. My Dr. said up to seven days is not that uncommon with breastfed babies.
