Independence Day, 2007 |
I'm spending this Independence Day at home with a sick kiddo. I'm not much into gatherings and fireworks anyway. Jay and Daniel went to our friends' house for a cookout and fireworks.
I doubt that I have appropriate appreciation for being able to live in this country.
I've never been oppressed because I was a woman, or white, or Native American, or Christian, or disagreed with the president and said so.
I've always been able to have and read my Bible freely, attend the church and school of my choice.
I can have a healthy debate with another citizen over whether government policies are effective or not, or right or not.
I have plenty to eat - so much, in fact, that I am overweight. My choices of food are so plentiful that I can choose between healthy and non-healthy versions of almost anything; I can afford to be picky and refuse to eat certain foods because there are plenty of others that will fill my tummy. I've never known hunger or starvation. I've never wondered where my next meal was going to come from. I've made some pretty creative things when the cupboards were low, but my cupboards have never been bare.
I gripe about the price of gas, yet my family income is enough that we have and drive two cars.
I'm not limited in where I go in my country. I can visit other states and national sites without having to prove my business and be constantly searched and watched. Where searches are mandatory, it is for the safety of all concerned, including myself.
I live in a country that immigrants desire to live in. They come for the employment opportunities, medical care, educational care, and career advancement options.
I live in a country that is so rich and so high profile that it is targeted by terrorists because we are seen as a real threat to their way of life.
We have diversity out the wazoo. Races, colors, religions, disabilities, personalities, careers, age, gender, height, weight, and personal preferences.
I'm glad God chose this country for me to live in - but I know I don't have the proper appreciation for it, or Him. But perhaps just knowing that much, and appreciating what I can, is a good start.
GOD BLESS AMERICA!
