Binkie help
Our son is 3 1/2 years old and is a binkie baby...he has the little soothie ones that they give newborns at the hospital. We have asked his dentist about the binkie and he said since it was so little not to worry about it. Riley only gets it when he goes down for a nap and at bedtime. Just lately though he has wanted it more often and it has become an absolute nightmare to deal with. I want to get rid of the binkie after we get home from vacation, but now I need some tips as to how to do this. I know for a few days it is going to be rough but does anyone have any tips to make it a little easier on all of us. I am a SAHM. I have two older sons, one is 24 and the other is 20. I am married to the best man in the whole world.

I've heard that cutting the tip off makes kids not want it most of the time. If that doesn't work, I think quick is best. Explain to him that it it is time to give it up and then just do it. Make sure he has some other comfort object to sleep with, like a special blanket or stuffed animal. You and he will have a few rough nights, but you will both get through it. It will probably be harder for you than for him. It's not easy to see your child upset, but it is best to take it away, as it will get harder as he gets older. Remember that kids are very resilient and can adapt to change fairly easily. Don't do it when there is anything else that just happened or is about to happen, like a vacation or a move. Also, don't take it away until you are committed to see it through. If you take it and then give it back it will be harder next time.

Hey Shanna
first off please join Parents of Toddlers I had a whole chat about the binky situatuion.
I will tell u this and thisis the truth. My son is 2 1/2 and USED the binky at nap and bed only never any other time up until literally 2 WEEKS ago. Thanks too alittle encouragement from the Parent of Toddlers group.
How did i do it COLD TURKEY no lie a told him I had to give it to the new babys down the street and he weined that night but feel right to sleep.
that next day we went to walmart and I bought him some little toys for ebing such a good boy I als wrapped a (old ) teddy bear doggy and when we went upstairs at night he opened it I told him granma dropped it off for being a big boy. That night he asked for it once and I ignored it. And ever since it has not been an issue.
I woundnt of believed it either but u really need tot try this especially aince he wants it during the day which is gonna be a nightmare for u.
He may be more upset but believe me they do recover very quickly it may end up being less of a stress then u imagine.
Keep me posted

My friend's 3 year old daughter had her's constantly! She finally figured out what she loved and replaced it. Her little girl loved Santa Clause, so in July for her birthday, she told her Santa was making a special trip to her party to give her a special gift if she would give him the binki. It worked! We told my daughter the "binki fairy" was going to come get it in the middle of the night and leave a special toy for her. (I think we got her furniture for her doll house). My husband hid them, so even I didn't know where they were and didn't have to lie to her all day. The point is, to find something he is willing to trade for it. My niece was not willing to trade anything, so her parents cut the tips off and she's allowed to hold the binki at bed time, but can't put it in her mouth. At this age they are very capeable of understanding much more then we give them credit for. Try different things until you find what works. If all else fails just tell him you're going to take it away in say 5 days, and then count them down, and then do it. Don't give it back!
