Teething myth? |
Has anyone else's pediatrician said to them that they do not believe teething causes pain?
I took my daughter last Monday for a slight fever, and overall grumpiness. I casually mentioned to the Dr. that I was not sure if she was just teething since when her bottom teeth came in, she also had 2 ear infections so I am not sure how she teeths. He said "well, we don't really believe that teething causes pain. You don't see older children crying when they get their adult teeth in." I was shocked...I know it causes pain, I have been a toddler teacher for 10 years, as well as a nanny to many teething kids. Who is right? |

I'm with you Kristi. I am so shocked the doctor said that to you. If it isn't pain it is definately discomfort! Why else would they have teething toys, orajel etc! Does he have kids himself, if so he should know better. Yes all babies are different but they must really struggle with the new sensation they are experiencing. |

This is 1 of 3 doctors we see in the practice. Not my favorite, but I love the other 2. When Elena was 2 weeks old I asked him if I should be letting her cry at all he said "20 minutes" I almost fell over, I still don't let her cry that long. I think he means well, he is just out of touch maybe. He is usually good with the medical stuff, and I ask for another dr. when I have parenting questions...this was a sick baby visit so I had no choice. I know that when I had my wisdom teeth come in it hurt really badly, so that is what I go by. |
