My children did not like the crib, at one year old I gave up and put them in a regular bed. I think what they did not like was the idea of prison.
I thaught them them how to get down from the bed and the house was babyproofed.
I think the longer you can keep him in the crib the better for you. However, if you see that he is trying to climb out the crib put him in a regular bed, it is a lot safer!
I would not go according to the age but according to his level of curiosity!

thanks for the reply
I agree age really isnt the factor and I have the monitor so if he wakes in the night and can watch to see if he is learning to escape. So I can agree with that.
Wow for u that they actually stayed in the bed at such a young age.!!
Or house is proofed and we did buy a gate for the top of the stairs (which is not up yet obviously) but there is still this fear that he'll just wanna come in our bed everynight. BOOHOO

Clearly that is going to happen, why do you think they don't want to stay in the crib!
They are small but smart, they learn at a tender age that making parents' life difficult is a lot of fun...lol

We moved my oldest to a toddler bed when she was about a year also. I was pregnant and the new baby was coming in a couple of months and I didn't want her to think the baby "stole her bed" so I made the switch. My youngest moved to a toddler bed around 1.5 years (she wanted to be a big girl) and both girls had twin beds around 2 years. Neither of my children, while very active during the day, have never been wanderers in the night. We just shut their doors, turn on the monitor and then we usually do not see them again until morning.

Laura,
I would absolutely wait until he is trying to climb out or having an interest in leaving it. Sometimes, kids love their beds, and they feel less safe with the ability to get up on their own. I also thought that putting a toddler bed in the room with the crib for him to explore before it was his must sleep in here spot helped for some kids I know. They would also start out in naps in the bed then move on to the full night in it when they were comfortable. It depends on your child I guess. |

A friend of mine and my sister both moved their toddlers to a toddler bed at about 14 months or so . the funny thing is my niece she would get out of the toddler bed and sleep on the cot in their living room in the middle of the night at first alot, but now she sleeps in her bed. |

I would keep him in the crib as long as you can. I put my son in a bed when he was 1 1/2 because we had a new baby coming. Its hard to keep them in the bed, and we woke up a lot more in the night when we moved him to the bed. He also fell out of bed a lot. LOL He is 2 now and does pretty well in it. But if I did it over again I would have bought another crib. |

My daughter is 17 months and is still in her crib.I plan to keep her in as long as she does not crawl out, unless she never tries to crawl out , but I am sure that will one day happen. My daughter does not mind her crib. she gets her self to sleep even and sleeps all night, I have read in magazines and books it is best to keep them in as close to three as possible. |

My daughter is 9 months old and has just started to climb out of the crib. She learned how to pull her self up to a standing position like 2 weeks ago and yesterday I woke up to her hanging on the bars like a monkey, I was considering moving her to a toddler bed early, but I was afraid she would still roll out of it. I was going to give it a few weeks but it just seems too soon. She is tall, so even with the crib on the lowest setting she has been able to reach the top of the crib. I just don't want to wake up to her screaming because she fell from the top of the crib... :( |

My son is almost 2 and still in his crib, he has no interest in leaving it, he's actually quite the opposite. Me and my husband say night, night when it's time for bed and he actually tries to climb into his crib, lol we think it's so funny. He does have a toddler bed set up in his room with toys all over it. When the time comes we'll know. |
