when a child is at the hospital |
I went through the experience of having a cvhild at the hospital and needless to say it was the scariest time of my life. In that moment you feel overwhelmed by pain and you feel very alone. It takes a while to understand that a lot of people goes through the nightmare of a child in the hospital and very often at birth. In that moment of my life I think it would have been extremely important to be able to talk to people that had that same experience. If any of you had a child in the hospital would you share your story, I believe that sharing help to heal or to be more prepared for anyone that will have to go through it.

When my oldest child was 2, he had inguinal hernias (on on each side) that had to be repaired. It was outpatient surgery but I was still very upset. Fortunately my mom and dad were able to be with me. I was allowed to accompany him to the preop staging area - he didn't seem too concerned cuz of preop medications. But when I had to leave him there I cried the whole way down to the waiting area, then cried on and off the whole time we were waiting. When the whole ordeal was over, Josh only took 1 dose of Children's Tylenol and ran around like a madman the afternoon of the surgery. I suffered more than he did!
My second child developed cellulitis around (not in) his left eye when he was three. The doctor didn't want to take any chances that the eye or brain would also becom infected, so into the hospital he went. I was able to stay with him 24/7 for the seven days he was in there. The first IV was traumatic, but went in quickly. Near the end it inflitrated and they had to move it. They gave him a sedative, then more sedative, and he was still hysterical. His daddy told the nurses to stop, that unless they could give him more sedation or put him to sleep they couldn't do the IV. The next morning the doctor was able to order enough of the right kind of sedation to get the IV in. His IV was only for antibiotics and he was unhooked between 'doses'. The hospital had toys for the children and Daniel chose a riding toy to ride up and down the halls. His eye swelled shut completely and the antibiotics didn't start working until the 4th day. When the swelling began to go down, the skin where it had been so swollen peeled. I really appreciated the people who came by to visit, and I would leave his room long enough to get a sandwich, but that was it. It was so hard!
Thanks for the opportunity to tell about that. It was very cathartic for me. |

My son was born at 30 weeks, and weighed 3 lbs, 1oz. He was soo tiny! It was a vaginal birth and my doctor tried to stop the contractions but the magnesium did not work, it fact, it made me laugh! I was able to visit him in the ICU everyday, he was there for 5 weeks. It was difficult to leave, but I needed to also care for my 4 y/o son. I would visit in the day and my husband would visit in the evening after work. Then, a week after Jordan returned home, he had pneumonia and needed to be hospitalized for 2 days. At 4 months old, he had a double hernia and needed outpatient surgery, he was great. I gave him tylenol for a couple of days because I thought he may be in pain, but he was laughing and smiling soon after the surgery. Jordan was also hospitalized for one night because of possible pneumonia, his oxygen level was low, but the next day, we found out he did not have pneumonia. He may end up being diagnosed with asthma when he gets oder, it runs in my family. He's been healthy this week, yeah!! |
