Phonetic reading
My daughter is five years old and I would like to introduce the concept of reading phonetically so that when she sees a word she does not have only to rely on her visual memory. I am telling her that a word is lke a puzzle and you put together the syllable and eventually it becomes a word, a sentence and a book! I am looking for educational material who might help me? teresa

I got the leap frog fridge phonics line and it helped so much with the learning of letter sounds and how to put them together. It really helped my daughter.

I can' t imagine a best tool than Leapster. The educational games are incredibly well done. One of my kid that likes to do everthing by himself loves it. Now he is teaching himself to read.

My 8yr old 2nd grader was having a very difficult time with reading when we lived in Florida. He went to school all day, had special tutors 2 times during the weekdays, 3 evenings a week & went to summer school between 1st and 2nd. He tested negative for learning disabilitis, ADHD etc. One of the tutors taught him the letters over using phonics. Then when we moved to Pennsylvania, out of no where he starts pulling all A's. Needless to say, his reading has improved, his self confidence is booming. It's a miracle.

My question is this, is there a different teaching styles or criteria from state to state that would make this sudden change or did the light bulb just turn on? He takes so much more pride in his school work now, and getting it done right, there are no more fights, or crying that he just doesn't get it.

I keep waiting for the low grades to come back, and his grades for the 2 report cards we've received for him here have been all A's and 1 B. The B is in reading comprehension, so I do believe there is or was an issue of some kind.
